Felperin, Leslie (September 3, 2023). " The Killer Review: Michael Fassbender Is an Unsettled Assassin in David Fincher's Wry, Pleasingly Pulpy Thriller". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on November 2, 2023 . Retrieved October 30, 2023. David Fincher’s The Killer ends with less of a bang and more of a quiet beach retreat. Based on the French graphic novel by writer Alexis "Matz" Nolent and artist Luc Jacamon, The Killer sees Michael Fassbender’s titular character, who remains unnamed throughout the film, finally find the man who put out a hit on him. The Killer was out for revenge and managed to kill every assassin, including his own handler, who was targeting him and his girlfriend, Magdala, after a hit gone wrong. Fassbender’s Killer finds Claybourne, a billionaire businessman, and clones his keycard to enter his home.

Fassbender is smart and stylish in the role, giving us a quiet but weighty performance that leans into the lone-wolf necessities of this perverse line of work. At times, he seems like someone we could find likable if we met him on the street; in other moments, his ruthless brutality is on full display. Tilda Swinton has a small part in the film, but it's nevertheless a pivotal one, and she perfectly embodies the qualities of wise and seasoned yet resigned. To give anything further away about her character would be a spoiler, but it’s a delight to see her show up in this story, even for just a scene. Another short-but-sweet appearance in The Killer comes from a less likely source: BBC journalist Fiona Bruce, an interesting bit of casting but nevertheless a good one. Her performance is natural and nuanced for the few minutes we get with her.

The Killer murdered everyone involved in the plot to kill him— from other assassins to a taxi driver — but he kept Claybourne alive. It’s possible The Killer didn’t kill Claybourne because he was hesitant about his commitment as an assassin. His dedication was called into question and, despite his meticulousness in performing his job, The Killer missed his target. But his hesitance in killing Claybourne has less to do with no longer wanting to do his job and more about leaving a billionaire in his debt. Despite his wealth and resources, Claybourne appears somewhat pathetic, dressing like a younger version of himself and clinging to materials and status symbols of the "cryptobro" archetype.
