Depending on the variety of sunflower you planted, plants will begin to produce flowers in 7 to 12 weeks. I admit, when we embarked on this unique kids' garden, I didn't realize that it would be a source of joy the ENTIRE SUMMER. We've grown potted planters and raised vegetable gardens with our kids in the past, but after a week or so their attention always wained. Building a sunflower house has been a completely different experience. Every child and their family is allocated a key worker. The key worker will work with you and your child to ensure that the introduction and stays at Sunflower House run smoothly. Time to play! Let your kids decorate and furnish the house by adding a stone doorstop or maybe chairs and a table for visiting with friends. Let them explore and play in the house during outdoor time. Admission to the unit is via a referral from the Children with Disabilities Social Work Team. A social worker will assess the child and families needs to ensure Sunflower House is the appropriate placement.We try to ensure that all children enjoy their visits to us, and encourage them to tell us about any concerns they have. Alternatively, you may wish to raise any concerns on their behalf by speaking to the manager or your social worker. There is a formal complaint procedure, which can be followed. We would also like to hear if you or your child are especially pleased with any aspect of our service. You can plant your kids' garden any time after your region is frost-free.Most of the smaller sunflower seeds take about two weeks to germinate, while the larger giant and mammoth seeds can take up to twenty-one days. So we've generally planted late May forearly June plants. A slow introduction is then planned, with your agreement, until a formal placement meeting takes place with your social worker for regular visits to be organised. Transport arrangements will be discussed with your social worker at the placement planning meetings. Please ensure that you send in enough clothes for your child’s stay. If your child needs pads please send in enough for their stay. It helps to label your child’s clothes; this should prevent anything getting lost. At Sunflower House we will wash your child’s clothes daily but if you’d prefer that we didn’t wash them then please let us know. To be a team member within the Sunflower House providing a substantial contribution to the clinical work of the team: including accepting, prioritising and assessing referrals of children and their families.
