About this deal

James Hawes' 'The Shortest History of England' does exactly as it says on the tin, which is, no doubt, a monumental task for any historian. James' Hawes pulls it off, but only just.

James Hawes doesn’t buy into the narrative that Britain is the World’s Greatest Nation Ever, Woo!, yet after reading his Shortest History of England I came away feeling an enhanced pride in my Englishness. It also left me feeling angry at the mistakes, messes and injustices that litter the broad sweep of English history, but that’s what makes for a rounded view of one’s nation, forged in self-examination rather than the fostering of a forced, false sense of superiority through facile comparison and outright denial. Divide England? Who could seriously propose that? With all that mighty history behind us? Well, it didn’t seem crazy to Winston Churchill in 1912. He said that if we wanted to preserve the UK we “would have to face the task of dividing England into several great self-governing areas”. Southern England was just too Tory – and too big. Churchill saw that in the democratic era an England dominated by this Tory south could not coexist with the Celts. If anyone thinks he was wrong, just look at what has happened over the past year.I've read 100s of books on English history but this is the first one that clearly explains the North/South divide. Additionally, some of the diagrams are so toytown that they call into question the seriousness of the book. For example, England’s finances in the first half of the 18th Century are illustrated by two little piggy banks, one with coins falling out of it, inscribed ‘Land war in Europe costs money’, the other with coins being put into it, inscribed ‘Naval war across the globe makes money’.
