Soldier – The Soldier is a veteran of warfare who has seen many battles and is an expert marksman with his Rifle. Though he does not have the style or family heritage of the Samurai, he is a hardened foot soldier that has access to a variety of different weapons and training. This is a miniatures game and it comes on sprues, so if you are used to one piece models this may be a little daunting, as you will need to build them. The original game editions were often cited as being on the fiddly side to make, and the overall end miniature quality was not in the top tier either, however the 2020 revised editions of the two core boxes have improved things a little, with better sprues and updated rule books, making this a more interesting proposition. The game also does have good artwork, and map tiles. Stalking the swampy jungles of Jargono, the deadly Swamp Raptor is one of the creatures most feared by tribal natives and Serpentmen alike!

Chochinobake – These demon-possessed, animated lanterns swarm the Heroes, relentlessly biting and burning them with terrifying speed. Building on the themes from the Forbidden Fortress Core Set, the Temple of Shadows Deluxe Expansion adds a ton of new content for the Feudal Japan setting and the Belly of the Beast OtherWorld. This boxed set includes: A Hero may, however, move onto one of the puzzle connection spaces in the Room, connected to another Map Tile, as they will still be on both Map Tiles. If that Map Tile also has an Exploration Token, both of them will be revealed during the Room Exploration phase.

The Trederran Veteran is a new OtherWorld Hero themed as a soldier from the bombed-out, industrial age, alien world of Trederra. A hardened warrior, this Hero class is highly skilled as both a hand-to-hand fighter and at range, with his trusty Trederran Trench Pistol. Over 250 game cards, a full set of beautifully illustrated, double-sided Map Tiles, a host of dice and counters, and all of the large Hero and Enemy record sheets needed to playSome Missions use a fixed map rather than a randomly generated board. For these Missions, the board is created at the start of the game, as shown in the Mission’s Set Up section and map diagram. If Heroes moved onto the Map Tile from two different directions in the same turn, roll off to see which of the two sides counts as the ‘Entrance’. Objectives describes what Clue Icons are used for during the Mission (if relevant) as well as what the final Objective Room may hold. It also tells how the Mission is successfully completed by the Heroes.

Each different Hero Class has a unique skill tree, letting players develop and customize their Heroes over the course of many games. The game difficulty is designed to scale to the number of players, and the enemies grow more dangerous as the players go up in level. Most importantly, characters can easily jump into and out of games, so if one player in a group cannot play one week, the group can play a mission without them or add new players to an existing group. Players can also easily take their established characters to other games, playing with several different groups. Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress can be played on its own as a stand-alone game, or it can be used in combination with any and all of the other Shadows of Brimstone products already available! It is fully compatible, in every way! For new players, Forbidden Fortress will make a great introduction to the world of Shadows of Brimstone, and for veteran players, it adds a ton of new content, including two brand new Worlds to explore - the Japanese castles and temples of the Forbidden Fortress and a living world inside a massive creature in the Belly of the Beast.
