The Women's Health Initiative randomised controlled trial showed that initiating treatment with hormone replacement therapy increased the risk of coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women. This contradicted earlier observational studies that found a reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease. Hernán et al. 2008 followed a target trial approach, replicating as far as possible the Women's Health Initiative trial using data from the Nurses' Health Study.
