About this deal

Actually, at least there’s something a bit different about this release and that’s nothing to do with the whisky itself. It’s about the container that the whisky arrived in. The bottle. A new bottle design, in fact! For Port Charlotte has been given a bit of a facelift, a gentle rebrand, a bit of TLC. Finalists: Appleton Eight Year Old 2020 Release, Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend (winner), The Duppy Share Aged Rum, Doorly’s 14 Year Old, Clairin Sajous 2018 (runner-up) and Hampden Estate rum. Buy the Rum of the Year 2021 Tasting Set here Gin of the Year 2021 The more I poured from this bottle, the less I found myself reaching for it the next time I wanted a peated scotch. It was a struggle to finish and, near the end, just used the final spoonfuls to deglaze some grilled pineapple. Score: 2/10 Conclusions Half of them were more trade-led and the other half had too many awards where it was all about how many gold medals they could deliver. Most importantly, you had to pay to enter, so then you automatically restricted [the award scheme] in terms of who could enter. Of course, a lot of the “Big Boys” enter. They have a lot of products so they choose what they’re going to enter and sadly some of the smaller brands who can’t afford to put five or ten products in, get left out. In the mouth: Not as hot as the 10 year-old, but with a good punch. The nose is definitely more complex and enticing than the palate. The taste is all cinnamon, leather, tobacco, and burning charcoal. There’s a bit of cinnamon, nutmeg, and dark chocolate that’s been burned in a pan.

I did a PC10 review a few years ago, but I wanted to see if more than the bottle got a facelift. And, spoiler, it did. But that’s to be expected with a distillery whose goal is flavor, not consistency. Let’s have a peaty start to tasting notes for 2021 with the Port Charlotte 10 yo single malt whisky. After the dramatic year that was 2020, I want to start this year on a high note. Start as you mean to continue. Port Charlotte and the Bruichladdich distillery is no stranger on the blog.Finalists: Linden Leaf 8 Organic Molecular gin, Lind and Lime gin (winner), Geometric Gin (runner-up), Distillerie de Paris Batch 1 gin, Boatyard Double Ginand Citadelle Reserve gin. At the time, we dutifully listened, but now have added the unveiled names of the whiskies to each sample. Whisky A – Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky It is a complex dram with many layers; each building on the next layer. You barely need water, just a drop or 2. A fantastic dram to start my year with. Excuse me, did I say oxidation? I was mistaken, the process of oxidation does not occur to whisky in a bottle. Now hear me out, that doesn’t mean the liquid doesn’t change, it just means that oxidation specifically doesn’t occur. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that is characterised by a molecule/individual atoms/ions losing one or more of its electrons to another molecule/individual atoms/ions. Basically, something that loses electrons is oxidized and something that gains electrons is reduced. That seems counterintuitive because why would something that acquires matter be labelled “reduced”? It has to do with the fact that an electron has a negative electric charge. The more electrons you have, the more “negative” or “reduced” the overall charge on the molecule becomes. All things considered, it’s pretty good compared to many other offerings from the distillery. The finish lasts significantly longer than either of the other Port Charlottes and is not as easy or traditionally pleasant. Lingering dark coffee ground bitterness and a wet campfire smoke remain minutes after taking your last sip. I enjoy dark chocolate and espresso so these flavours are not wholly unpleasant to my taste preferences but they are surprising considering the red wine cask usage. I mean honestly. A friggin focus group? What has happened to The Whisky World? Every other whisky these days is shadow of its former self and my local high end supermarket has run out of Glenfarclas! As Simon Coughlin, CEO of International Single Malt Whisky at Remy Cointreau states, Bruichladdich gives a huge emphasis on being from Islay. From people working at the distillery to the barley used, you can easily see how important being from Islay is.

After many limited releases, we finally have a permanent age-statement expression of Port Charlotte, with a satisfying number of years under its belt.... It is peated to 40ppm, in line with other Islay heavy-hitters, but the peat is never a blunt instrument, retaining sufficient restraint to allow other characteristics—maritime notes, the sweetness of caramel, coconut, and orchard fruits—to shine through.Number 4 in the 2018 Top 20 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by:Gavin Smith(Winter 2018)

That being said, the 10 was much improved of the two, despite the fact that the quarter cask started strong. Upon first opening the 10 year-old I was worried that it would sit on my shelf for years untouched, but it ended becoming decently average as the headspace grew. The quarter cask became a broken and pale imitation of what it once was after roughly the halfway mark. I wonder if there was any difference in filtration technique or cuts of the distillate taken for each of these expressions that might account for these results. In any case, it appears Laphroaig 10 is the best value if you want some longevity from you scotch. Then again, this could all be moot as these results are specific to my palate and could also be specific to these respective batches. Bruichladdich introduced The Port Charlotte 10 yo whisky as the flagship Port Charlotte expression. It’s peated to 40ppm, and drawn from a combination of first-fill American whiskey casks, second-fill American whiskey casks and second-fill French wine casks. Though, to be honest, I’ve never met a PC10 I didn’t like. It may shift and change a bit from one release to the next, but it’s always a solid, tasty, Islay Scotch that covers an array of notes to cover an array of preferences. From fruity to coastal Port Charlotte 10 Years is just plain pleasant. Where Octomore is the Bruichladdich heavily peated expression, Port Charlotte is closer to the standard level of Islay peat. The Port Charlotte 10 yo whisky is non-chill-filtered and with natural colour. The Vermouth I used was a “perfect” blend of 50% dry vermouth and 50% red vermouth. Tasting the two versions side-by-side I was impressed by both and found the Campari and Vermouth both enhanced, more than they distracted from, the spirit. However, a victor had to emerge and that victor was Version 2. It was a bit more balanced and kept the PC 10 more front-and-center while also adding a complex herbal and candy sweetness from the Campari and Vermouth. PC 10 Scotch “Negroni” Recipe
