About this deal

Sulphur, or flowers of sulphur in this case, is an anti-bacterial agent, also called sulphur powder. It has a bright yellow colour and has been used to support skin health for centuries – not just mud fever – sulphur is also used to support other skin issues too. First of all, let’s look at pig oil. The doesn’t sound particularly appealing but its other name, mineral oil, sounds a lot better! Its consistency makes it easy to rub into feathers, to help provide a water repellent barrier between the horse’s skin and the mud. It’s often used on heavier horses due to this, but can also be effective on those with less feather as it gets through the hair, right down to the skin. And, as for the name, it was originally used on the skin of pigs, to help keep in it good condition and stop it drying out.

Clean the horse’s skin, especially around any scabs or sores, to remove dead skin cells before treatment. This reduces the places for mites to hide and also interferes with their food source. Waterproof barrier for legs: Apply liberally to dry legs using a soft brush or sponge. If the horse has heavy feathering you will need to ensure Traditional Pig Oil is massaged through the feather thoroughly to create an effective barrier. If very muddy conditions it may be necessary to wash the legs and allow to dry before reapplying A comparative study using fipronil spray in a 0.25% solution and doramectin given at a dose of 0.3 mg⁄ kg on two occasions 14 days apart by subcutaneous injection revealed both drugs to be effective in eliminating behavioural signs in affected animals. Although mite numbers were significantly reduced in both groups neither drug completely eliminated mites and there was no improvement in the appearance of the lesions themselves. In a further study, ivermectin paste, given orally, was investigated using three different protocols. All of the horses improved. However despite waiting 3 weeks after therapy to assess the horses there was no significant change in their clinical scores. The advantage of systemic medication is that it negates the need to clip off hair from the pasterns and overcomes the difficulty of applying topical applications on what are often fractious horses. Despite the improvement seen in these studies, none of the drugs completely eliminated mites.” (3). You don't need to buy any expensive lotions and potions. Add a splash of iodine to Pig Oil and you have hoof oil. Pig Oil is far better than detanglers and conditioners. If you wash your horses mane and tail you can use some swished up in the final rinse. It makes a good hair conditioner.

Lime sulpur dip is made from calcium hydroxide, sulphur and water. Researchers applied a solution of 97.5% diluted to a 5% wash. That is, 50ml of lime sulphur solution in 1 litre of water. The horses were washed and then had the treatment solution applied via spray bottle to wet hair. The solution was left on the horse – not rinsed out. This treatment was applied once a week for four weeks. For the horses with feathers I fill up an old washing up bottle, then I can squeeze it onto the skin for the feathers. For the non-hairy legs, I pour it into a spray bottle and spray the legs. Is Pig oil a mineral oil? Adding vegetable oil, such as canola oil, is a useful way to boost the caloric density of your horse’s diet without significantly increasing his feed intake. Another fat source to consider is stabilized rice bran, a high-fat supplement that is often pelleted. What feed makes a horse shiny?

While no studies have been done to prove the efficacy of using Pig Oil to treat feather mites, the fact that it has been around for so long and is used so widely indicates it must be effective. Lime Sulphur Dip Showing and stain prevention: Apply a thin layer of Traditional Pig Oil using a sponge to mane, tail and body to create a lustrous shine and prevent the build-up of stains.

When combined in a product like Mud Slide Lotion, or mud product that uses flowers of sulphur and pig oil, you have a product that’s easy to use, easy to apply (even if the horse has heavy feathering), helps maintain healthy skin and, because of pig oil’s mud and water repellent nature, the mud just slides of after a day in the field! These are the most common types of mite to be found on horses in the UK, and affect the legs, usually below the knee, and mainly the hind legs. These leg mites are also known as ‘feather mites’, as they tend to be more common in heavily feathered breeds. The reaction they cause in the skin is also sometimes referred to as ‘heel mange’ due to its location on the leg. Horse Care & Grooming Toys Grooming Clippers & Accessories Feed Fly Relief Hoofcare Supplements Veterinary All Horse For milder cases of mites, topical washes, sprays and shampoos can prove effective treatments. A patch test should be performed prior to use of any external treatment, to ensure the horse does not suffer an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients.

Lice: Apply liberally to manes, tail and body with a soft brush or sponge massaging well into base of mane, rump and tail areas that are more commonly affected. Reapply as necessary. Once weekly washing is recommended using Nettex Equine Veterinary Surgical Scrub where necessary to remove the build-up of dirt and grime before reapplication. Because mites also breed in the mane and tail, the bases of these should also be treated. Only the base needs to be covered and just enough to cover the area. This will kill any mites which are breeding and living in these places. This will also help sweet itch as gnats and midges tend to die in the oil and they cannot bite. Cold pressed canola or soybean oil or any oils that have been fortified with omega fatty acids are particularly effective. Rice bran oil and coconut oil are also good for coats. If you use a complete feed, choose one that contains ingredients like full fat soybean, sunflower seeds, and cold pressed oils. What kind of oils relax a horse?
