About this deal

It is important that the entire pavement is treated; this fluid may cause slight beaching or lightening of some surfaces, and therefore spot cleaning could result in the stain being replaced by patches of slightly paler surface. By cleaning the whole surface, any bleaching will affect all of the paving and not just individual spots.

Wipe down the wall with sugar soap (make sure you mix with water to the manufacturer’s specifications) or you can use detergent and water. You can buy specialist efflorescence cleaner if you prefer but this is not necessary if you are using salt neutraliserA further handy tip for heavy staining is to pre-wash the affected paving with "OxiClean", a product more normally associated with domestic laundry. There is a treatment for efflorescence called Salt Neutraliser which you can buy from most DIY stores. The idea is to stop the remaining salts reacting with water and thereby preventing efflorescence forming.

In this situation you need to find the cause and repair it. You can buy Salt Neutraliser treatment (pictured below) and this is covered further in our How To Treat Efflorescence section. SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE. Do not dilute. Completely cover the rust stain with the product. Leave to act for 15 minutes. The product colour will change to a deep purple as it reacts with the rust. Once the indicated time has elapsed, remove the residue and rinse the surface thoroughly with plenty of water and leave to dry. Repeat application until the stain is completely removed. Mortar breaching the cavity in a double skin wall, this could allow water to travel from the external wall to the internal wall For more stubborn stains, you could use a degreasing agent or engine cleaning fluid such as Gunk, but always test a small inconspicuous area first for adverse reactions. Efflorescence on plaster can cause white marks on internal walls and it can occur behind paint and wallpaper.Apply using a brush and allow to stand for 10-15 minutes ensuring the area does not dry out and is scrubbed occasionally with a stiff brush. However this is a different problem to efflorescence (also known as "salting"). You can read more about spalling in our project on freeze/thaw damage. Each type of rust – internal and external – needs to be treated differently for effective removal of the stain. We recommend one of two products – LTP Rust Stain Removeror LTP Ferrex, both of which can also be used indoors and outdoors. Colours are sold in the nearest tin size but actual paint volume per tin may vary up to 10% depending on colour Once it is clean you should rinse down the wall with fresh clean water, to ensure that the wall is free from grease

The method of cleaning depends on the composition of the paint. For example, acrylic-based paints will require a different type of paint remover compared to polyurethane or epoxy paints. The sooner an oil stain is treated, the more likely it is to be removed. Use a cloth to soak-up any oil droplets on the surface, but don't smear or rub the oil into the surface. Fresh oil stains can be soaked up by proprietary absorbent materials or even some of the clay-based cat litters, cornflour or talcum powder. Any residue remaining after treating with an absorbent agent can sometimes be removed or ameliorated by scrubbing with a detergent and brush before washing down with water. It may take several attempts for this to work. Clean oil will generally soak into the paving and there will be little evidence of its presence after a few weeks. Dirty oil can be very difficult, if not impossible to completely remove. Lemon Juice - genuine lemon juice, fresh from a lemon, not from a bottle or a plastic imitation lemon. Squeeze directly onto the stained area, allow it to react for 5 minutes or so but don't allow it to dry out. While still wet, scrub the stained area with a nylon/polypropylene bristled brush (an old toothbrush is ideal), working the lemon juice into the surface of the paving. Wash off with plenty of clean water after 5 minutes and repeat as necessary. If stains persist, repeat the process and or use the cleaner undiluted taking care to test the neat cleaner first on an inconspicuous area.

Everbuild 407 mortar stain remover can be used on:

Where this is the case the salts can be brushed off the wall and they should not re-occur. However, in cases where efflorescence is caused by a water leak, for instance where lead flashing is damaged, or masonry joints are missing, thereby allowing water to continuously enter the construction material, then efflorescence will continue to form. These white, fluffy salts that are "crunchy" to the touch and where they occur beneath wallpaper or paint the crystals are strong enough to push these coatings off the plaster, we say they "blow" the plaster. If the paint is still fresh, soak up as much as possible, being careful not to wipe and further spread the paint. You can then use a solvent on the area before washing with warm water and detergent. Remember to follow any safety instructions on the paint remover or solvent. Please note that given the current circumstances alot of carrier companies are struggling to keep up with demand and although we do book these deliveries as next day services, the carriers cannot always fulfil these and an extra day may be required. This water will find its way out of the wall through evaporation leaving the salts behind. The salts can be brushed off, but they frequently re-occur and damage the décor again.

Remove excess dirt, mortar, etc. with a stiff yard brush or hand brush, the use of a churn brush is advised as extra pressure can be used on this type of brush. Stain and Damp Seal Paints dry and cure much faster than normal paints which prevents the stain forming through the paint Older, fully dried stains can be scraped off the pavement and the residue removed with paint stripper. On suitable surfaces, the careful and sparing use of a blow torch may help soften the dried paint, but avoid using heat on macadam surfaces, as the binder (tar or bitumen) may burn. With stone or concrete surfaces, careful application of heat a little at a time may help but prolonged, direct application can cause the surface to shatter or spall, sending dangerous shards of paving flying in all directions, so wear safety goggles and proceed wiuth caution. This should only be undertaken on minor stains or if the efforts of the mechanical cleaning described above have left an undesirable or unsightly stain.Once the Salt Neutraliser is fully dry you can redecorate your wall using paint or wallpaper. It is also useful to note that if you are going to paint the area then you may want to use a stain and damp primer before adding your top coat. The stain and damp primer will ensure that no tide marks or marks or any kind will reappear on the surface at any point in the future In the photie above, old, reclaimed yorkstone flags from the streets of East Lancashire have been brought up like new by blasting with grit to remove all dirt and surface staining.
