About this deal

As the iPhone isn’t quite as robust as some of the other entries on our list, it’s better suited to older children, though there are plenty of tough cases available to protect it. The included 18-55mm kit lens zooms from wide angle to short telephoto, allowing it to cover landscapes, portraits and everything in between. There’s also built-in image stabilisation to reduce camera shake and smooth out videos. Beyond standard picture taking, most digital cameras also offer up the ability to record video clips, a feature that may be well worth considering.

For teenagers looking to get serious about their photos or study photography, the Canon EOS 2000D is an excellent choice. In my case, we bought a Kidizoom Due for our 5-year-old daughter, and she loves it despite being barely able to operate it. In contrast, when my son was around the same age, he inherited an old Canon Powershot A620 – a vastly superior camera that in my opinion – is easier to use.

The only thing to keep in mind is the cost of the film. Polaroid i-Type film can be a little costly, so this camera is best suited to older children who can pace their shots. On the bottom of the camera there is a micro USB port for connecting the camera to the computer and a MicroSD card slot to expand the memory.

First, its image quality is functional but poor, even when you factor in its price. Furthermore, its 320×240 video resolution is below that of VHS tapes. Rotating the Kidizoom’s lens ring activates the Sepia filter Compact cameras have had a rough few years, with the entry-level market all but eaten away by camera phones. However, the Canon IXUS 185 is a highly competent point-and-shoot that can compete with pricier smartphones. Nevertheless, the Kidizoom is a nice product; my daughter loves it as she does all new things. Therefore, as a present and a toy, it succeeds. Images are pretty basic as you can expect from a 2-megapixel camera aimed at children. They're clear enough for seeing on the camera's screen. If you wish to print them you'll be able to get away with 8x6 inch images at the largest.

In itself, the Vtech Kidizoom Duo is a well-made product with a very generous feature set. I also get the feeling a lot of love went into its design. However, the Kidizoom Duo does have some problems. Image Quality There are loads of filters and effects built in, allowing for plenty of creativity. And, if paired with a smartphone it can share printed images straight to social media and even be used to print photos that have been taken on the phone. The camera feels well built and robust. It is completely covered in grippy rubber around the edges, which means it should withstand being dropped from child height. The two grips are great for little fingers, enabling kids to hold the camera comfortably with both hands. Amazingly, and unlike the thousand-dollar cameras I usually write about, the Kidizoom Duo features built-in memory. While it’s only 256MB, the Kidizoom is good to go as soon as you feed it four AA batteries. But in the long run, 256MB is not enough, and you’ll need to invest in a card for Kidizoom’s Micro SD slot. The camera doesn't feature any manual controls, with everything decided automatically. Although you can turn flash off or to auto mode yourself as well as set a timer. In the settings menu there is the option to change the image resolution of the front camera from 2 megapixels to 0.3 megapixels, to save memory space if your child is snap-happy. You can also choose to turn photo optimisation on or off, and there is the option of a self timer mode too. Screen quality is actually pretty good for the size of it. It's bright and clear. There is no option to change the brightness of the screen, so in direct sunlight it may be difficult to see. When you’re not taking photos, there’s a photo editor in which existing photos can be tweaked. And for those long car journeys, the VTech Kidizoom comes armed with five surprisingly fun video games. Cuteness overload with Kidizoom’s frames.

Regarding connectivity, the Kidizoom Duo features a smartphone-style USB Micro-B 2.0 port for dragging and dropping photos onto your computer. As the price point suggests, there’s no Bluetooth or wifi. The Vtech Kidizoom features a nice 2.4-inch screen and attractive menusLike all cameras these days, the Vtech Kidizoom Duo records videos. Specifically, the Kidizoom camera can record 320×240 videos for up to ten minutes. The photo was taken with a Vtech Kidizoom Duo 5 Connectivity and Power The camera is powered by 4x AA batteries and no information about how long they should last is given. The camera will tell you when the batteries are running low, and there are auto-off functions so that the camera will turn itself off after a few minutes of being inactive. The camera seems pretty responsive, each image takes a second or two to process and save. There shouldn't be too many tantrums while waiting for the camera to load, with a start-up time of about 5 seconds. Movie: Shoot a movie. Up to 5 minutes if using internal memory, 10 minutes if using a Micro SD card. The resolution is 320x240 pixels.
