Nose: Relatively strong peaty notes at first of smoke, tar, charcoal, but also a light pepperiness. Caol Ila is certainly making its presence known, but there’s room for other aromas. Gentle herbs and soft citrus notes (mostly sweet orange peel) round out a balanced olfactory experience. Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”).

It’s probably not fair to put a blended malt at the center of the blends versus single malts argument. But in this case it represents the largest brand of blended Scotch whisky in the world, so just indulge me. Johnnie Walker Green Label was among the first whiskies I owned. It was a gift from my girlfriend and I remember being very chuffed with it. The Chivas Regal 18 Years was also one of my early whisky discoveries. But for years afterwards these types of big name brands were barely on my radar. Because I’ve been as guilty of the aforementioned snobbery as anyone. Its release in July follows the recent re-launch of Johnnie Walker Green Label in global markets after a four-year absence in many countries. There is so much to discover in the world of single malts that it sometimes doesn’t seem necessary to pay attention to blends or even blended malts. But that would be a mistake. Blends are masterpieces in their own right, play an important role in the world of whisky, and they’re not just for mixing with soda. (Although, a highball can be awesomely delicious.) Actually, many blends or blended malts are of similar or better quality than similarly priced entry-level single malts. We just have a bit of trouble admitting it sometimes. With Water: A few drops of water result in a spike of tart aromas (tropical fruit), while taming the peat. These carry through to the finish. This changes a lot – I suggest trying it first without the water, and then adding a little to see how it changes for you. Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Limited Edition – which is completely covered in gold lacquer, displays elegance in design.

let’s simmer it down a bit with this smooth label. Now, the Gold Label Reserve is somewhat creamy and smooth in texture. The honey tone is a marriage of flavors between the Speyside and Highland whiskies. The sweetness of the blend pairs perfectly with apple juice and soda. He said: ‘The launch of Johnnie Walker Island Green is a true game-changer for the Scotch whisky category in travel retail. Everyone knows Johnnie Walker. They are a staple in every bar and restaurant around the world. They may not be your favourite malt, but they certainly are the globe’s. And with Johnnie Walker Island Green they set for a full take over. Finish: Medium-long. A twinge of honey sets in adding much-needed sweetness, and the charcoal notes turn slightly bitter. Fades slowly, without evolving. John Walker & Sons XR 21 – this 21 year-aged whisky is in celebration of Sir Alexander Walker II’s knighthood under King George V. Blogroll

A prime example of an excellent blended malt is Johnnie Walker Island Green. It’s a smoky variation on the classic Johnnie Walker Green Label with a greater proportion of malt whisky from Caol Ila. The blend also includes whisky from Clynelish, Glenkinchie and Cardhu. Johnnie Walker Island Green (43%, OB, 2020) The colour is a yellowish gold. No surprise we get crisp malt on the nose, but it's also exceptionally fruity with green banana, papaya, lime pith and raspberry. Coastal peat wafts throughout. Slightly medicinal. Vanilla pods. Quite herbal with mint and sage. Water works brilliantly, bringing out more smoke with sardine (good to see you, Caol Ila). The nose is a perfect balance of fruit and smoke, with a lot of character. That balance is retained on the palate, with kumquat, strawberry cream, key lime pie, more vanilla and a slight touch of caramel. Oily mouthfeel. The peat is more restrained this time, but reminiscent of smoked fish (Pam woke up, nosed it and gets Trinidadian saltfish). Maltier with water. It's very easy drinking, but could use a bit more spice. Jim Beveridge, master blender for Johnnie Walker, said: ‘As whisky makers, we’re passionate about flavour, and creating this exclusive travel retail variant of our blended malt whisky has given us an opportunity to showcase a rare blend of rich malts.’
