Specifications (A6M2 (Type 0 Model 21)) [ edit ] Orthographically projected diagram of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero

With regards to propulsion, one of the main companies involved in the project, IHI Corporation, has been testing a new jet engine, the XF9-1 low-bypass turbofan engines since 2018. This engine includes some interesting "exotic" materials that will help keep its weight down while simultaneously increasing the engine's heat tolerance to as much as 3,272 degrees Fahrenheit (1,800 degrees Celsius). We've already touched on a few likely capabilities of the F-X above, but these are just rumors. At present, and for obvious reasons, technical specs for the F-X are not available. However, it will likely be a twin-engine fighter with advanced technologies, including remote drone control capabilities, a VR-style helmet-mounted display, and a radar that can double as a microwave weapon to fry enemy missiles (as mentioned above).Soumille, Jean-Claude (September 1999). "Les avions japonais aux coleurs françaises" [Japanese Aircraft in French Colors]. Avions: Toute l'Aéronautique et Son Histoire (in French) (78): 6–17. ISSN 1243-8650. The Mitsubishi A6M " Zero" is a long-range carrier-based fighter aircraft formerly manufactured by Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 carrier fighter ( 零式艦上戦闘機, rei-shiki-kanjō-sentōki ), or the Mitsubishi A6M Rei-sen. The A6M was usually referred to by its pilots as the Reisen ( 零戦, zero fighter), "0" being the last digit of the imperial year 2600 (1940) when it entered service with the Imperial Navy. The official Allied reporting name was " Zeke", although the name "Zero" was used colloquially as well. Mitsubishi Ki. 46...the Aesthetic Asiatic". Air International. Vol.19, no.6. November 1980. pp.227–233. ISSN 0306-5634. According to the press release, Japan is hoping to build around 90 of the fighters initially, which will replace the venerable, but now aging F-2 planes. It is hoped that the aircraft will be ready for deployment as soon as 2035. Nohara, Shigeru. A6M Zero in Action (Aircraft #59). Carrollton, Texas, USA: Squadron/Signal Publications, Inc., 1983. ISBN 0-89747-141-5.

The experts who evaluated the captured Zero found that the plane weighed about 2,360kg (5,200lb) fully loaded, some 1,260kg (2,780lb) lighter than the F4F Wildcat, the standard United States Navy fighter of the time. The A6M's airframe was "built like a fine watch"; the Zero was constructed with flush rivets, and even the guns were flush with the wings. The instrument panel was a "marvel of simplicity… with no superfluities to distract [the pilot]". What most impressed the experts was that the Zero's fuselage and wings were constructed in one piece, unlike the American method that built them separately and joined the two parts together. The Japanese method was much slower but resulted in a very strong structure and improved close maneuverability. [29] Sometimes considered as the most effective variant, [47] the Model 52 was developed to again shorten the wings to increase speed and dispense with the folding wing mechanism. In addition, ailerons, aileron trim tab and flaps were revised. [48] [49] Produced first by Mitsubishi, most Model 52s were made by Nakajima. The prototype was made in June 1943 by modifying an A6M3 and was first flown in August 1943. [50] The first Model 52 is said in the handling manual [51] to have production number 3904, [52] which apparently refers to the prototype. a b c d e f g Simpson, James. This aircraft was formerly flown by the Commemorative Air Force after being restored by Robert Diemert. [125] During the 9 months of fiscal year 2021, JASDF fighters scrambled against 785 inbound flights. [18] Chinese aircraft were intercepted 571 times (70%), and 199 Russian aircraft. [18] The majority of the Chinese aircraft flew over Okinawa prefecture. [18]

Until 2015, women were banned from becoming fighter jet and reconnaissance aircraft pilots. The first female pilot of an F-15 joined the ranks, along with three other female pilots currently in training, in 2018. Major units of the JASDF are the Air Defense Command, Air Support Command, Air Training Command, Air Development and Test Command, and Air Materiel Command. The Air Support Command is responsible for direct support of operational forces in rescue, transportation, control, weather monitoring and inspection. The Air Training Command is responsible for basic flying and technical training. The Air Development and Test Command, in addition to overseeing equipment research and development, is also responsible for research and development in such areas as flight medicine. On May 19, 2020, the JASDF officially inaugurated its Space Operation Squadron. [20] F-15DJ Eagle Toda, Miki (27 January 2016). "World War II Zero fighter flies over Japan". AP. Associated Press. What this all means is that the future of air combat appears to be moving away from reliance on manned fighters exclusively, but rather developing an integrated system of fighters and unmanned aircraft as support. note:- The Shiki designations must be used in full, as written below, because the Type number only refers to the year of the designs inception.)
