However, I do like those moody, dramatic ballads, "Let Me Go", "Come Live With Me" and the near histrionic "Temptation", singles all, as well as the kitchen-sink production on "Key To The World". Key to the new sound was the fortuitous entry into Heaven 17’s orbit of John Wilson – Gregory worked with him at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre. Although predominantly a rhythm guitarist, it’s Wilson’s extraordinary bass parts that allow much of this material to take flight. Wilson steals the show again on Soul Warfare with Steve Travell providing subtle piano accompaniment. Meanwhile, We’re Going To Live For A Very Long Time is a neat satire of smug high achievers. We’re not musicians. Technically we can’t play a lot of the stuff that’s on the albums, but our arranging capabilities have developed and we write a lot more interesting music now. We’ve got a better grasp of mood and feel,” Ware told Music Technology magazine in 1987. “We design the albums for our own pleasure. We regard ourselves as the directors of the film, rather than the actors.”

Numerous synthesizers and electronics were utilized to create the album, among which include the Linn LM-1 and Roland TR-606 drum machines, the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer, and the Roland Jupiter-8, Roland System-100M and Fairlight CMI synthesizers. [13] Live performances [ edit ] years later our audience are still loving those songs and we are very excited to be touring our most successful album The Luxury Gap. Come on and jump aboard the Heaven 17 time machine, let’s party like its 1983”

years later The Luxury Gap Heaven 17’s sly, post-modern critique of modern society has never sounded so resonant, nor been so necessary. On the celebratory tour Glenn Gregory said: Another album better than The Human League Most people when they think of this period of Synth-Pop or just 80s Pop in general will most likely explain to you that it's cheeky, and not very innovative. Which I will agree that there is plenty from this period like that. But I become slightly bewildered when I hear people talk of albums like The Luxury Gap in this way. So many factors to this record being one of the most overlooked of the decade. In January 2017, Ware and Gregory started work on a new album at Ware's London studio "The House of Illustrious". A work-in-progress version of this album was released by Bowers & Wilkins under the title "Not For Public Broadcast" ( Society of Sound #105). [28] Pennanen, Timo (2006). It’s hard to say but it’s clear that the old adage of ‘we’ll fix it in the mix’ can’t always be relied upon to rescue middling material. Given a bigger release, Deeper And Deeper could have been a massive hit among house music DJs. It’s a missed opportunity for sure. Whereas Ian Craig Marsh and Philip Adrian Wright have totally disappeared from my (and other folks) radar, after a journey in excess of 40 years, Phil Oakey, Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory are still on the synthpop case! This evening literally a few feet in front of me on the raised De La Warr Pavilion are Martyn and Glenn. They are accompanied by keyboardist Florence Sabeva, the stunning multi-octave vocal from Worthing based Rachel Meadows, as well being equally matched by Kelly Barnes. We are all gathered to enjoy 40 years of ‘Temptation’ and ‘The Luxury Gap’ album. The band appeared on Later... with Jools Holland on 22 October 2010, performing "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang" and "Temptation" and appeared in BBC Children in Need in November 2010. They also made a tongue-in-cheek appearance in TV advertisements for Sheffield-based broadband provider Plusnet. [24] On 22 November, the band released a 2 disc DVD combining never-seen-before documentary and rehearsal footage with the band's full live concert filmed in Sheffield in March 2010. Also included was a unique collection of all the digital videos used in the live show, set to the accompanying live audio from the performance. Each video was commissioned from a different visual artist and included both established up-and-coming artists from the worlds of digital and graphic design, fine art, and film. In contrast to Heaven 17's debut studio album Penthouse and Pavement (1981), the singles from The Luxury Gap charted strongly, particularly " Temptation", which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart and was the 34th biggest selling single of 1983. Other hits included " Come Live with Me" (UK number 5) and " Crushed by the Wheels of Industry" (UK number 17).
