About this deal

After you’ve stained the wood your desired colour you’ll then need to seal and protect the wood using a finish of your choice. We have a wide variety you can choose from; Once you know what the existing finish is, it will then need to be prepared using the steps outlined above. Once correctly prepared you can then apply your new stain. A highly concentrated wood stain that stains wood in one simple application. The formulation is water-based and so is safe to use in all environments, has a very low odour and is non-toxic.

If the existing dye that was used was fairly low quality it may not have soaked into the timber that much so it may be possible to sand most of the colouring out. A. Yes you can. Our Wood Stain has been designed to deeply penetrate all wooden surfaces. However, you’ll always get best results by giving the wood a light sand first with #100 Sanding Pads. Our Wood Stain is specially formulated to evenly dye wood, ensuring equal and even colour penetration throughout. The stain dries to a natural matt finish in only 10 minutes and has excellent coverage. Finishing wood after staining However, a wood dye is designed to soak into the surface making it a huge amount tougher to remove.

After staining wood, you should finish the job by sealing the stain in with one of our Wood Waxes, Wood Varnishes or Wood Oils. These will enhance the colour of the stain further, provide additional protection and can be used to alter the finish to either satin or gloss. Wood Stain Options A. We recommend leaving the stain to soak into the wood for one or two minutes before wiping the excess off. This will prevent the stain from staining the wood too dark; you can then apply a second application of Wood Stain if you want to darken the wood further. Using a 220 grit piece of sandpaper, sand over a small inconspicuous area. As you sand, if the colour begins to fade and the natural colour and tone of the timber starts to show through, chances are that the timber you’re working with has been stained.

Once all lightly sanded off you should have a great base for your stain. 3 A. Applying a new Coat of Wood Stain the Same Tone or Darker than the Existing Stain When using a paint to colour wood, you risk hiding the natural grain. However, a wood stain is designed to completely soak into the wood, dye it to your chosen colour. andbring out the beauty of the natural grain in the timber. However if the existing dye used was a good quality dye then it will probably have soaked a fair way down into the timber. Apply the Wood Stain with a Foam Brush or lint-free cloth (You can also use a regular bristle brush). Wait for it to soak into the wood and then simply wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. The longer you leave the stain to soak in before wiping any excess, the darker the colour will be. Multiple coats can also be applied to achieve a darker colour. How to stain wood - Finishing Once applied, to get the best streak-free finish possible, gently wipe over the applied stain using a clean cotton rag, wiping in the same direction that you applied the stain (with the grain) as this will then remove any streaking.Ensure that you get your sandpaper down into any and all awkward or tight spaces. If any of the existing stain/varnish is left this will effect the appearance of your new stain. If you want to apply a second coat of varnish, give the first a very light rub over then remove any dust and debris and then apply your second coat.

Our Wood Stain can be used to restore or change the colour of all types of interior and exterior wood. It can be used to stain old wood, as well as brand new wood and is easy and simple to use. Used Wood - If the wood is old, it may be painted or varnished. If so, remove any old coatings using a Paint & Varnish Remover first. These coatings will prevent the Wood Stain from soaking into the wood. If the wood has been treated with an oil or wax, wipe the surface down with thinners or mineral spirit to remove this. After removing the old finish, sand smooth with #100 Fine Sanding Pad. Repeat this process until you have covered one full side of your item and then leave to dry. Once dried, repeat for the other side. 3 B. Applying a Lighter Shade of Wood Stain Over Existing Darker Stain Brush on the sealer using long brush strokes running in the same direction as the wood grain. Gently brush off any excess sealer using a dry brush to prevent any visible brush strokes from showing up. The Wood Stain instructions below explain thoroughly how to prepare wood, stain wood, and then how to protect wood afterwards. They will help you get the best results when using our Wood Stain. Preparing Wood for Staining

2. Sealing Timber Prior to Staining

The longer you leave the excess on the surface to soak in the deeper/richer the colour will appear. We therefore recommend removing it after only a minute or two and if it dries too light, you can apply another coat. However, if you apply too much and it dries too dark, it is much harder to sand, strip and then re-stain the wood! If the colour remains the same or only changes very slightly the timber has likely had a dye applied to it. After wiping off the excess Wood Stain, you’ll need to wait for about 10 minutes for the stain to thoroughly dry. Once it’s dry, a second coat can be applied if desired; applied in the same way as the first.
