So, what’s driving an increasingly health-conscious nation to scoff sweets? Why isn’t gum seeing the same growth? And what separated the winners from the losers? Fruittella sweets first came around in 1931, when the people at the Italian-Dutch confectionery company, Van Melle, created the classic, chewy Fruittella squares. The sweets first arrived in the UK in the late 1950’s and have been popular ever since. They were all the rage during my childhood in the 90’s! The company said this ‘new conscious candy’ adds breadth to the Fruittella brand, which also includes the successful Better For You sugar-free and less sugar ranges. Fruittella has announced the launch of a new line of gelatine-free soft candy after seeing the “huge demand for vegan sweets” from consumers.The jungle themed jellies sport the vegan approved stamp from the Vegan Society, contain all natural colours and flavours and are gluten free. Sadly, this flurry of activity isn’t reflected across gum – a sector that “is significantly less dynamic than others within confectionery” according to Nielsen’s Paulson. Sales have been sluggish as a result. “The biggest growth this year has been from Starburst, which is simply establishing itself in the market after launching last year.” To ensure consumers peace of mind, the products are registered with The Vegetarian Society’s vegan logo.

We’ve worked to make sure our new Fruittella jellies have the same great taste that people expect of any Fruittella product.” Overall, Fruittella sweets are very high in syns, having up to 2.5 syns a sweet and being very high in sugar, to save syns we would recommend eating these sweets in moderation due to their high sugar content.We know that gelatine is not vegan-friendly but what about other ingredients in sweets? There are many accidentally vegan sweets in the supermarkets but you have to be careful when choosing. You’re always on the lookout for eggs and/or dairy, but there are a few non-vegan ingredients that can sometimes slip by- ones you may not notice at first glance. If you think Brits are eating more candy because there are more reduced sugar options on shelf, think again. The launch of Haribo’s 30% less sugar Fruitilicious in early 2018 “has not been followed by a stream of reduced sugar variants as we may have expected” says Adam Paulson, client manager at Nielsen.The growth of veganism is in line with the evolving way that consumers, especially younger generations, are seeing health,” says Candy Kittens marketing manager Ana Melvin. “Perceptions of health have shifted from focusing on macronutrients to looking for natural, unprocessed ingredients this year, which is benefiting vegan confectionery brands.”
