About this deal

I thoroughly enjoyed Hannah Gold's first book in this series - Finding Bear - and was more than excited when I heard there would be a sequel. As a fellow Arctic fanatic, I wanted to follow up on April's previous adventures with Bear - a polar bear she helped rescue in the first book. The perfect sequel to The Last Bear. Finding Bear melted my heart and had me cheering, crying and of course roaring along with April. She’s a powerhouse main character - one that’ll inspire children for years to come” - A. F. Steadman I have not read the first book about Bear by Hannah Gold, so I was slightly apprehensive about beginning with the sequel. And it did take me a couple of chapters to really become immersed in the story. But Finding Bear is an absolutely beautiful story. In a book which is once again stunningly illustrated by Levi Pinfold, we find ourselves totally immersed in the terrifying Arctic winter in Svalbard. In this book, April is trying to settle into her new life at home but, of course, missing her beloved Arctic friend. April has a special power that enables her to sense when something isn't right with Bear, and she suddenly gets a message that her help is needed once again and she heads off to Svalbard in search of Bear, with her father accompanying her all the way.

This is gorgeous writing for both young readers up to adults. Joyous escapism and getting the true message across to children about the plight of the polar bears who are facing starvation today. The way it’s blended just works. It’s not preachy or over the top and the storytelling is lovely. The narrative is clear about the negative impact of climate change on wildlife in the Arctic - in particular, there is a resonating scene in which April finds a polar bear who has died of starvation. The greatest impact of the book however is that it leaves you with a sense of the incredible natural beauty of the Arctic – as Abi Elphinstone says, it is ‘utterly transporting’ – and the importance of doing all we can to preserve it. April is a fierce advocate for the wildlife of the Arctic. Her voice speaks out strongly in anger over the impacts of climate change, yet the book ends with hope as she realises the power of leading with her heart and her passion on display to inspire others.

The unmissable follow-up to the phenomenal bestselling and award-winning The Last Bear. Beautifully illustrated by Levi Pinfold and perfect for readers 8+When Hannah Gold’s The Last Bear was published, I think it took everyone by surprise with its phenomenal readership. Everyone wanted a copy and now they can all have the sequel which is an equally phenomenal and beautiful story. In case you didn’t read The Last Bear, I suggest you do, here is a brief overview – Bear Island is the setting and despite its name it no longer has any bears, at least no polar bears. That is what April has been told by her father whose scientific research is taking him to this remote Arctic location for six months. But then April meets a polar bear, staving, hungry and a long way from home. April and the bear set out on the most important journey of her life and the story is breath-taking. I loved The Last Bear, so I was very excited to read Finding Bear, the second book in the series, and It was everything I hoped for and more. Hannah has created something so special. My children love these books as much as I do, and they will be cherished forever. The unmissable follow-up to the phenomenal bestselling and award-winning The Last Bear. Beautifully illustrated by Levi Pinfold and perfect for readers 8+.

April Wood has returned home from her adventure on Bear Island. But, over a year later, she can’t stop thinking about Bear. This story is also full of awareness and messages for children to take away about the effects of climate change and how even doing the smallest things can help more than you would expect. With global warming and similar issues being so prominent these days, I love that Finding Bear had so much information about it and how April always found ways to make a difference, no matter how small. What a beautiful book and so cleverly written. Hannah Gold is a fantastic Author. I haven’t read book one in this series but knew the basic premise of it and do intend to read it also. Stunning illustrations too! Really special. But your dreams, April. You dream of saving the world. That’s what makes you different. That’s what makes you extraordinary.” Stunningly illustrated, this touching environmental story of surviving and thriving is both scientifically accurate and magically inspiring” - Daily Mail When April discovers that Bear is trying to save his cub, the journey becomes even more urgent as they fight to survive. The reader, while being so wrapped up in April’s emotions and the dramatic action, is also inescapably learning about the impact of climate change on this special environment and the responsibility we all have to protect it.

Along the way April gets separated from her dad but eventually finds Bear. When he leads her to his cave a surprise awaits her, a polo bear cub who she names Peanut. But there is not enough food for Peanut to survive out in the cold and April knows she must get him to safety. The author’s passion for her subject makes for a powerful and memorable reading experience that will certainly not disappoint the many fans of the award-winning The Last Bear, providing a satisfying and credible outcome which leaves you filled with hope for both April and Bear. The perfect blend of adventure and environmental activism, with real emotional depth. April persuades Dad to return to Svalbard, he's not happy- Maria doesn't really understand why as she hasn't heard the full story. Dad points out it might not be Bear but April is convinced.Oh, I love these two and the bond they both share. It’s now even more loveable with the introduction of cute, full of fun and mischief Peanut. Hannah Gold’s writing style is so fantastic that it captivates you to such an extent you feel every breath, every wind blow, the coldness around you, the vastness of the Arctic and even down to the feel of Bears fur against your skin. The fantastic and mesmerising images drawn so beautifully by Levi just add to the magic of the whole book. When April hears that a polar bear has been shot and injured in Svalbard, she’s convinced it’s her friend and persuades her dad to travel with her to the northernmost reaches of the Arctic. So begins an unforgettable journey across frozen tundra and icy glaciers.
