About this deal

As well as the rear monitor, there’s an also an 0.2-inch, 1,166k-dot EVF (Electronic View Finder), giving you the flexibility to compose your images however you like. There’s an eye sensor which switches the EVF on automatically for seamless operation, while you can continue to use the screen to set AF point using Touch Pad operation. Photo is an innovative system which is useful for extracting stills of fast moving subjects. However, it’s fair to say that it works best with Panasonic’s larger sensor cameras, such as its range of compact system cameras. With the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90, even when shooting in bright light, the extracted stills can look a little smudgy. Basically, you can shoot almost any way you like here – or alternatively leave it in auto and snap away, letting the camera’s (clever) electronic brain to do the heavy lifting. The 20.3-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor records high-quality images in remarkable detail. It also combines with the Venus Engine to take stunning pictures even in dimly lit environments with minimal image noise. Life in Vivid Detail With the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90 it is possible to record videos in 4K. But that's not all: like other models in this series, it offers the option of using the Photo 4K mode. This consists of the possibility to choose a frame from a video recorded at 30fp and save it as an 8 megapixel image. Add to this the 180° tilting screen and the result is the ability to take high resolution selfies. 30x Optical Zoom

The Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds, which is great news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 4 seconds at ISO 80. The camera takes the same amount of time again to apply noise reduction, so for example at the 15 second setting the actual exposure takes 30 seconds. On the front of the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90 is a rubberised grip to help it feel comfortable in your hand - you can use it to hold onto the camera while your forefinger rests on the top of the camera over the shutter release. Compared to the nearest competition, the Canon Powershot SX730 HS, the Nikon Coolpix A900 and Sony Cyber-shot HX90. Simply flip the monitor and the camera will automatically enter into self-shot mode. You have lots of choice when it comes to capturing the perfect self-portrait, with the new 4K Selfie mode ensuring you get the look you want. TFT Screen LCD Display (1040k dots), Tiltable monitor/Static Touch Control/Field of View: Approx. 100%, Wide Viewing-angle, AF Coating Video footage is similarly acceptable without being outstanding. Perhaps I’ve just got too accustomed to the razor-sharp 4K movies captured by Panasonic and Sony’s compact system cameras, but the clips here just don’t offer the same degree of eye-slicing crispness. Being able to record 4K video, and also the 4K Photo modes is something which is likely to appeal to quite a few different people too. The tilting touch-sensitive screen is super handy for selfies, while the viewfinder is there if you need it, if not to be used all the time. Axis HYBRID O.I.S. +*/* 5-Axis compensation works in video recording except for 4K video or high-speed video recording.

LVF (Live View Finder) (1,166k dots equiv.), Field of View: Approx. 100%, Lens 19.6x/Magnification: Approx. 2.59x / 0.46x (35 mm camera equivalent) All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 20 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 7Mb.

Using Wi-Fi you can connect your smartphone to the camera, and with the Panasonic Image App which is available for Android and iOS, you can remotely control and shoot with the camera, transfer images, add geotag GPS location data to shots, record a snap movie as well as create a photo collage. When shooting using the app, you can use the touchscreen of your smartphone to set the focus point, and you can change a wide number of options and settings without having to reach for the camera. The zoom feature of this Panasonic device is quite interesting. In addition to the aforementioned optical zoom, it has a 60x digital zoom, which, despite the loss of quality, can be very useful. The lens is the 24 mm Leica DC Vario-Elmar, and the sensor is a 20.3 megapixel MOS. For certain types of compositions, the built-in viewfinder, a 0.2-inch, 1,166-dot LVF, will be particularly useful. The screen, on the other hand, is a 3-inch LCD. Compact Design and Affordable Price But it’s the bells and whistles that impress the most: not only does the TZ90 feature a crisp, bright 3in touchscreen that flips up 180 degrees to face forwards (a boon for selfie aficionados), there’s even room for an electronic viewfinder. Sample Photos - Exposure is reliable, and detail is quite good, however, colour reproduction may not be to everyone's tastes, with quite muted colours compared to the competition. Noise is visible, even when shooting at the lowest ISO speeds when viewing images at 100%. Results were better when shooting in sunny conditions. Photos with flash show no signs of red-eye. Dynamic range is quite good, with the camera avoiding over-exposure where possible. You can use the iDynamic option or HDR option to record extended dynamic range in images.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90 handled chromatic aberrations well during the review, with just a little purple fringing present around the edges of objects in certain high-contrast situations, as shown in the examples below. The Panasonic features a metal front, and plastic rear and top. There's a good sized rubber grip on the front of the camera to assist in holding the camera steady. The camera feels well-built, with a solid hinge on the screen.

A mode dial lets you choose between the different exposure modes on offer for the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90. There’s full manual mode, as well as semi-automatic options like aperture priority and shutter priority. There’s also an automatic option, creative control mode, scene modes and panoramic option to choose from. You’ll also see a mode labelled “C”, which allows you to save a group of custom settings and can be useful if you often find yourself shooting one type of subject (for example low light). A new 20.3-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor is a boost in resolution from the TZ90’s predecessor, the TZ80 (18.1-megapixels). Combined with a high-power Venus processing engine, you can be assured of high image quality in a range of scenarios, even low light. x 1080 pixels, 50p (FHD: 28Mbps / AVCHD) (Sensor Output is 50fps) (Dolby)/1920 x 1080 pixels, 50i (FHD: 24Mbps / AVCHD) (Sensor Output is 25fps) (Dolby)/1920 x 1080 pixels, 50i (FHD: 17Mbps / AVCHD) (Sensor Output is 50fps) (Dolby)/1920 x 1080 pixels, 60p (FHD: 28Mbps / MP4) (Sensor Output is 60fps) (AAC)/1920 x 1080 pixels, 50p (FHD: 28Mbps / MP4) (Sensor Output is 50fps) (AAC)/1920 x 1080 pixels, 30p (FHD: 20Mbps / MP4) (Sensor Output is 30fps) (AAC)/1920 x 1080 pixels, 25p (FHD: 20Mbps / MP4) (Sensor Output is 25fps) (AAC)/1280 x 720 pixels, 30p (HD: 10Mbps / MP4) (Sensor Output is 30fps) (AAC)/1280 x 720 pixels, 25p (HD: 10Mbps / MP4) (Sensor Output is 25fps) (AAC) The lens covers a 30x optical zoom range that’s equivalent to 24-720mm in 35mm terms, and is accompanied by five-axis Hybrid O.I.S. technology to help keep things stable at longer focal lengths and in low light. Actual recordable time is the time available for recording when repeating actions such as switching the power supply [ON] / [OFF], starting/stopping recording, zoom operation etc.MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth. Though many manufacturers have ditched the production of standalone digital compacts entirely at the time of writing, models to compare with the Panasonic Lumix TZ90 include the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS, which boasts a similar form factor but ups the focal range courtesy of a 40x optical zoom, as opposed to the ZS70’s 30x optical reach. However, both cameras share the same 20.3 megapixels 1/2.3-inch sensor specification, and both also deliver well saturated images that require either no, or just modest adjustment in the photo editor of your choice afterwards. It’s appealing to both entry-level users and those with a little more experience. The full-range of automatic modes, along with scene and creative modes are likely to appeal to beginners, while shooting in raw format and taking full manual control is something enthusiasts are likely to be drawn to.
