About this deal

Craigellachie Distillery always has been a guarantor for Malt w´Whisky that ensures the high quality of Dewar’s Blended Whiskies. The Craigellachie Whisky is not very well-known yet because for a long time it has only been used for Blends like The White Horse. Some independent bottlers had Craigellachie in their program from time to time, but a 14 year old Craigellachie released in 2004 was the only original Single Malt release until 2014. Since then we have a 13, a 17 and a 23 year old Craigellachie Single Malt Whisky available. Craigellachie Whisky presents in a sweet, voluminous and oily style and a hint of a dead match.

Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. The village of Craigellachie was an important hub in whisky’s history as it was here, in 1863, that the railway lines from Lossiemouth (north), Dufftown (south), Keith (east), and the Strathspey Railway (south west) met, allowing rail transport between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth within the region. To administer and maintain funds and properties formerly belonging to Craigellachie Association, the Craigellachie Public Hall and the Craigellachie Playing Fields Association. Nose: Still fresh and not over-oaked, it takes its time to unravel and reveal all on offer. (Over the course of the night, we let this sit for over an hour, returning to it every 10-15 minutes and discovering the nose had opened up and was offering an increasing kaleidoscope of aromas). There’s Jam Rolls, gentle oak, soft fruits, and some lime zest to balance the “older” notes of old parchment, leather, and tobacco leaf. Craigellachie is – or perhaps was – one of Speyside’s great little secrets. A wonderful distillery that sits unabashedly beside the main road running through the Craigellachie village, its whiskies have been well known and admired by whisky connoisseurs for many years. However, it seems it’s time for Craigellachie’s malt to be appreciated by a bigger and wider fan club.

Come and stay in one of the most beautiful areas in the northeast of Scotland. The Speyside region has options that suit all. The Highlander Inn is another hotel in Craigellachie and their bar offers a great range of whiskies. Palate: Big, juicy malt that has a fascinating interplay between savoury and sweet. The savoury wins out – that glorious meatiness is the last man standing. To promote the benefit of the Craigellachie and environs without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, by association the inhabitants, voluntary organisations and local authorities in a common effort to advance the education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for said inhabitants.

Craigellachie’s distillery, however, was only built in 1890. Designed by Charles Doig, it was built with all modern conveniences with the express intention of making a lighter fruitier character than the older distilleries – one of the earliest descriptors of Craigellachie mentions pineapple as a desireable aroma. As Craigellachie is surrounded by a number of larger towns you are never far away from something fun to do or see. There are golf courses aplenty in the area – Rothes Golf Course and Dufftown Golf Course are short drives away from the town. Nose: There’s a faint smokiness on the nose here, but this is again a nose that needs time to unravel. With time there is honeycomb, toffee, and sweet spices.Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. Craigellachie Bridge over the River Spey was built by Thomas Telford in 1814. The bridge is a remarkable piece of engineering, and can be viewed from above or below. The bridge was chosen for the last parade of The Gordon Highlanders and The Queen's Own Highlanders before the were amalgamated in 1994 to form 'The Highlanders'. Comments: Those looking for a whisky that sits halfway between a Speysider and a robust Highlander with spice and depth should look no further. Nose: Not too dissimilar to the 13yo, it’s a little drier and softer – the alcohol seems more refined and the extra years in wood both flatten and widen the spectrum of aromas that remain firmly camped in the house style.

Palate: Sweet fruits, particularly red currants and red apple skins. Toffee popcorn and crème brulee. Craigellachie is making a bit of noise right now with the global release of its 51yo – a whisky that will be far more accessible than you might at first think, but more about that in a moment. In the meantime, let’s set the scene… Craigellachie’s stillhouse If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. With the 17 year old Craigellachie you get some caramel and fruity notes that are more voluminous and rich

Age:

That same rich and complex fruit delivers here as well, but this time it comes with a charred and woody companion. Glazed honey, and a slightly nutty character remind me of honey roasted nuts with notes of burnt toffee / brûlée, malt, smoke, vanilla and cinnamon playing supporting roles. A splash of water brings out a bit more of the wood, malt and earth.

Craigellachie Bridge is also a licenced wedding venue and has already had several ceremonies performed on it. The Craigellachie 13 year old is permeated with nice aromas of citrus, mandarin and orange. A sweet and a bit dry palate brings up fig and a hint of cinnamon. A long and clear finish preserves the citrus notes. Palate: Great character on display – the spirit has depth and dryness from the oak. There’s, again, plenty of cereal, but this is countered with some genuine spice, tannins, and dried fruit. Perhaps a higher proportion of sherry casks at play within the vatting? A truly delicious whisky that is approaching old age but still punching with the vibrancy and spirit-led flavour of youth.
