About this deal

Campaigns are where your choices really make a difference as the game becomes about more than just the task at hand. You need to think ahead to what you can salvage and trade to keep your malfunctioning ship in the sky and keep your crew alive. We’ve done a whole post on Campaigns HERE. Core Space is a science fiction miniatures board game. Each player takes control of a band of Traders trying to make a living in a dangerous galaxy, all the while hunted by the Purge, a semi-sentient race of humanoid machines whose sole task is to harvest worlds. Using the right skill at the right time can make the difference between failure and success. There are lots of useful skills in Core Space and they give a wide range of ways to play, but there are a few that I try to take on every mission. Combat skills Since then, however, the Shift Change at MegaCorp expansion has sold out twice and we’re down to the last few of our third print run! Clearly we should have had no cause for concern, and this success has affirmed that Core Space is big enough to support a range of plastics going forward. This is great news for Core Space players everywhere. So, what next?

This game comes with a lot of optional expansions that really add to the incredible universe, each expansion has its own theme. But you really do only need a base game, the campaign in this game is hugely repalayable, there are options to make your own missions, a huge variety of community content and the Mission Monday's created by the very talented Battlesystem team.

Co-operative or Competitive?

Each game does very based on the decisions you make around the sandbox style events that can play out. Each game usually takes me between 45mins to an hour as a solo gamer, add some extra time if you plan on playing this as a group. Round after round the game will present you with opportunities, but you won’t have the resources to take them all – not enough crew, not enough actions, not enough ammo, the wrong equipment. You will need to make difficult choices, echoing the choices made by your crew as they struggle to survive. The right choices will keep you alive; the wrong ones will cost you dearly. Co-operative or Competitive? Although mostly working within government contracts she has dabbled in freelance work for less savoury individuals or businesses. Over the years Kovac has developed a slight taint of corruption, common with those who work on the fringes of society. She is a talented technician who will turn a blind eye to the ethics of an experiment if it pays well. A Price on Your Head Core Space! A game that may surprise more than one. Salvage, Trade, Adapt and Survive! All is said! The excellent rule book explains everything, given choices to make or to just dive in with one of the two preset crews in the box. If your a fan of the starwars or firefly genres this will be right up your street.

Once you start I defy anyone not to start expanding with the excellent expansions which only help embellish an already awesome game. RPGs: Core Space gives you the freedom to do anything, especially with the advanced section of the Deluxe Rulebook. Your characters can dive through windows, throw equipment to each other, use the terrain as a weapon or makeshift cover – it’s really up to the players how they want the narrative to progress. The game can also accommodate a GM who can take over the AI from the Purge and steer the story as they see fit, designing custom missions for their gaming groups. The neoprene mat, cardboard terrain and the minis really make this game draw you into. Minis are plastic and require no assembly. Each mini has great character, and while I highly recommend painting them, they come in different colours to easily identify the different types, so you can play straight out of the box. What exactly is Core Space, and is it the game for me? If you’ve been asking that question, read on. Here’s what the rulebook says: You must complete missions, explore space derelicts and frontier worlds, salvage, trade, upgrade your crew and fight to live another day…Amidst this bedlam are the traders, trying to scrape a living with nothing but their wits and their simple credo to follow: In this game of survival each player takes control of a small band of Traders trying to make a living in a dangerous galaxy. You need to contend with criminal factions, an overzealous police force, a deteriorating ship, rival Traders and a relentless alien species that wants your biomass. You’ll see lots of beautifully painted models, but not everyone is a painter. The models are colour coded by type so you can play with them straight out of the box without painting.

And that's the richness of the game system. Already during a game it feels like living an adventure but we will have to maintain our crew and our ship between each session. Core Space is a fantastic sandbox game where anything can happen. It's hugely atmospheric, the incredible terrain is like nothing else, the amount of quality components in this game is insane. So what can we say except that the bet of compiling 3D and ultra-modular decorative elements with a pure SF miniatures game of the "sandbox" type, mixing RPG and skirmish... is successful! So yes, with 500 games in our toy library, of all types, of all genres, including RPGs and miniature games (SW, Némésis, Batman, Arcadia Quest, S&S...), we found in Core Space a game original, generous, open and evolving which subtly mixes everything we are looking for: fun, pure SF, miniatures (but not too much!), adventure, encounters and superb settings. We love it! The range of Auxiliaries will be further expanded on the release of First Born, as these new rules are used for the Autocam drone in the In the Line of Fire expansion, as well as Mixer – the loyal companion of Daric from Trading Post 5.

With this box you get everything you need to dive in, don't be daunted when you first open the box. You get so much for your money and all high quality. From dice to minis to counters terrain and even a wonderful mouse mat style play mat in glorious detail. Kovac is a lab technician who has worked in some of the most dangerous parts of the known galaxy. With no family or close friends to tie her down she is a brain for hire, ready at a moment’s notice to ship out to wherever she is needed. Miniature Skirmish Games: Everything that happens on the ‘board’ itself will be familiar to a skirmish gamer. Your characters will move, shoot and fight using straightforward dice-rolling mechanics, with victory often determined by taking an objective or defeating the enemy. Here are some examples of how Core Space has pulled typical elements from each category and unified them into one game: Co-operative missions can of course be played solo by taking just a single crew, or controlling multiple crews. They can also be played in teams with players taking one or two characters each. Core Space can be adapted to the size of your gaming group with ease.

Sounds exciting doesn’t it? But how to tell if it’s your sort of game? There’s a whole spectrum of game categories these days, from family board games to narrative role-playing games to hobbyist wargames. More recently a new hybrid category has appeared, falling somewhere in between – the ‘miniatures game’. What exactly defines a miniatures game can vary, so where exactly on the spectrum does Core Space fit? The Sci-fi Miniatures GameThere are dozens of campaigns and scenarios and it is possible to play in many configurations: solo , 2, more... or with a Game Master, yes! (NB: the basic box allows to play from 1 to 2 players, you have to buy or create other crews to play more) All of the above is true if you are playing First Born too, but even more so. The rewards of plundering the ancient catacombs of a hostile and advanced species are great, but the risks reflect that. First Born are tougher than Purge The rules are simple and the management of the NPCs works very well and the AI is frighteningly well done. And the system allows a very large adaptation of the rules used but also of the universes in which you want to play. People have already made it possible to play with miniatures from Assault on the Empire, Nemesis, Aliens... When you start the game you’ll have little more than a t-shirt and a pop gun from a vending machine, but as you play you’ll get the chance to acquire lots of new equipment. Even a simple machine pistol is a big improvement, but some gear is especially worth finding and hanging onto. Armour After surviving your first mission, it’s worth investing your new cash into getting armour, as a Trader is more likely to survive the next mission with this than the slightly better gun you’d buy otherwise.
