About this deal

If you get a bug, lint, or other debris in the paint, you can use a rolled up piece of tape to remove it. Just be extra careful not to cause further damage to your painted surface when doing so.

Here’s how to fix damage to a plastic bumper, right through to repairing the paintwork using colour-matched car paint. Fixing dents and gouges Tools

Painting your bumper

We hope our review of the best car spray paints has been helpful. For more suppliers of related products, including paint rollers, paint stirrers, spray guns, car wash detergents, and electric buffers, consult our additional guides, or visit the Thomas Supplier Discovery Platform. Sources If you’ve already prepped your bumper, it will likely already be cleaned with either a surface prep cleaner, and/or a combination of grease and wax remover and water-based cleaner. The purpose of cleaning the surface of the bumper is to ensure the best possible adhesion for the primer and paint to adhere to. Grease and wax remover cleans (as the name suggests) grease and wax, and alcohol-based cleaner removes water-based contaminants such as sweat, fingerprints, etc. Now, protect the bumper’s paint and make it glossy by applying a clear coating. A glossy clear coat will enhance the paint’s durability as well as make the bumper look shiny and stylish. By using a spray gun rather than rolling the color on or using a paintbrush, users can get even and smooth surfaces on their car. Auto spray paint isn’t just for the car’s exterior, but it can also be used on the underbody of the car, interior, bumper, and wheels. With the bumper prepped, it will be ready for paint. The primered bumper should feel smooth and appear uniform in color (the primer’s color). Re-tape the areas that you don’t want paint to get onto once more.

From the information I’ve gathered, it is best to spray your 2K clear coat between one hour and one day from when your last coat of base coat was applied. This ensures the best adhesion and results when you are spraying your clear. I like to spray my clear about 1-2 hours after I’ve sprayed my last coat of base coat. The flash time on this product is 5-10 minutes, so you should wait at least this amount of time before spraying on the next coat of clear. After the first coat of 2K clear coat, you will notice that each subsequent coat of clear will give you a bit more clarity in the finish.

Trim Bumper Paint

Shake the base coat can per the instructions on the can to properly mix up the paint. Then spray 2-3 coats of base coat onto the bumper so that you have full and even coverage on the bumper. To obtain the best results, you want to spray the paint on wet; if you spray it on wet, it will go on with with a more even texture and result in a good uniform color. Shake up the can to mix the clear coat per the instructions on the can. This is the part where your finish starts to look amazing. Before spraying the 2K clear, your painted bumper may look good but it just doesn’t have that pop. Well, after the clear coat is applied (especially after the second and third coats), you’ll see some amazing results. According to my experience and recommendation, spending extra money will make the paint job last longer and look more professional. Many were amazed by the results they got from this acrylic paint lacquer. “I’ve used this paint since I was a teenager and it’s always worked well,” described a buyer. “I’m impressed with the way it blends into the other paint.” Specifications

Water-based paint is an automotive paint that is very popular in car shops and industry practices. This is because it is the best automotive paint for the environment and is much safer than other chemical formulas. Although water-based paints are fairly common in auto shops, their availability is more limited in the consumer market and they aren’t as prevalent in spray cans. Acrylic Enamel Paints If your car has scratches and damage that won’t buff out, we can help. Our car touch-up paint is colour-matched, which means it will seamlessly blend into your existing finish, making scratches a thing of the past. When a bumper is dented, the paint isn’t always broken. When the paint isn’t scratched or scraped, it may be possible to repair the dent without needing to apply any new paint to the car simply by massaging any dent out of the bumper. When the paint has been broken, however, such as with a scratch or scuff, we have developed a fantastic process to ensure the repair blends in and isn’t visible once the repair has been completed. I used craft knives to remove the silver trim (which has a sort of soft glue behind it), and cut away as much of the paint as I could from the bumper. Almost all of it came off, except for the area under the number plate, the areas which had been under the wheel arch covers, the paint on a downward-facing section below the ‘forehead’ of the bumper, and some of the paint in the complex shaped lower part of the bumper. Where I couldn’t remove the paint I used rough sandpaper to ‘feather’ the edges of the paint, so there wasn’t a step down to the plastic, then 400 grade paper to sand out the scratches. It took quite a few hours to complete this step, but I enjoyed it and Ju joined in for a bit as she’d been dying to piggle off the paint for years! Removing the old paint and lacquer with a craft knifeAs well as bumper scuffs and scratches from parking, rear bumpers are also susceptible to damage from loading heavy luggage in the boot, as well as scratches caused by transporting pets in and out of the car. Similar to the primer with these 12.5 oz spray cans, they cover about 4 square feet of area if you’re spraying 2-3 coats of paint. I used about 3-4 cans per bumper cover. I needed slightly more paint than the primer for the same area because I needed to ensure there was enough coverage of the paint more so than the primer. Furthermore, when you get to the last bit of paint in the can, you start experiencing some splatter. So, you may end up having to stop spraying base coat before you get to the very last bit of paint in the cans. As a result, you’re using about 90% of the paint in the spray can, but you avoid paint splatter on your paint surface. 2K Clear Coat

After waiting overnight, you may find that the primer surface is somewhat rough. It’s best to sand down the bumper with 600-grit wet sandpaper, as well as a grey scuff pad on areas that the sandpaper has trouble getting to such as corners and edges. An alternative to using 600-grit wet sandpaper would be to use Eagle Abrasives K-Series K-600 grit sandpaper, which sands dry. After you’ve applied primer onto your bumper, you will need to sand it down with 600-grit sandpaper. This smooths out the surface after the primer is applied and allows for a better paint finish afterwards. You can either use a 600-grit sandpaper, or you can use the K-600 dry sandpaper that comes in this Eagle Abrasives Job-Pak. Of course, there are different types of automotive paint colors and finishes, but automotive spray paint can even vary down to the formula. Base Single-stage paint is applied in one coat and dries glossy. In general, older vehicles are painted with this type of paint, which is less expensive than basecoat and clear coat. In contrast, basecoat & clear coat paint requires a two-step process in which the basecoat is applied first, followed by the clear coat. Most new vehicles are painted with this type of paint, which provides a higher quality finish. Extent of Damage:Bumper protection is key to upkeeping a safe and functional bumper. Once your bumper has been repaired, we recommend that you wait for five days to allow for any paint to have fully cured before washing or polishing the bumper. Once those five days have passed you are able to wash and polish the bumper as normal. We would recommend, if you want to keep your car in fantastic condition, washing the bumper at least once or twice a month (depending on usage). We would also recommend using a premium car wax to give the bumper an extra layer of protection against the elements. How much does a bumper repair cost? If you get any bugs or debris onto the clear coat while it’s drying, you may be able to use the tape method (mentioned earlier during the base coat application) to remove it very carefully. Since the clear coat is going to be your final layer on your paint, you don’t want to mess around too much with clear coat. If the particle is not going to be terribly noticeable, you may want to just leave it be as sometimes messing with it might cause even more noticeable blemishes like gouges or fingerprints in the clear coat. Painting a bumper can vary greatly in price depending on several factors, such as the type of paint used, the type of vehicle, and the condition of the bumper. Here are three possibilities. Since rattle cans only spray when they are upright or mostly upright, you will need to ensure you use something to prop the bumper up. There are bumper stands out there that will do this, but you may be able to find something that you don’t mind getting paint on to prop it up, if you want to save some money.
