About this deal

But first, why should anyone care about wind? Well, in the extreme, a stove can just plain blow out, and blow out so often that one just can't cook with it. See the rather dramatic first video in Windburner vs. Jetboil Wind Testing. At first glance, we had concerns about the scalloped, curvy pot stand lips (which are designed to be compatible with BioLite’s pot and grill cookware). But upon testing, we had no issues balancing off-brand pots as well, even a small 1L pot. So yes, the BRS is an ultralight canister stove with the nearest competitor, the OLICAMP Ion Micro Titanium Stove, being nearly double the weight!

Also, be careful when using alcohol stoves because their fuel burns clean blue and can be very hard to see. Always make sure your stove has fully burned out before handling it or attempting to re-fuel. Never use an alcohol stove in a fire ban area. A small amount of spilled fuel can easily ignite dry brush. In addition, it is worth noting that Japan has some of the highest gas stove safety standards in the world. I am not aware of any Chinese stoves that have been able to meet the strict Japanese standards. I have seen some US (Coleman) and European (Primus) brands on my trips to Japan. An inbuilt piezo ignition is handy, though in my experience this one can take several tries to spark - and I'd never leave home without the insurance of a spare ligher in any case. The burner section is not free standing, so has to be connected to a canister to stand upright. Not everyone needs the tiniest stoveon the market. Especially if you camp year-round, you’ll want to choose a four-season stove, or one better rated for cold performance. While there’s not a power switch like on gas stoves, the four fan settings (ranging from low to high) do a great job of controlling the size of the flame. It also doesn’t take too much time to cool after use. The Soto Amicus is a small, relatively lightweight, relatively inexpensive upright canister stove. There are dozens of such stoves available on the market today. How is the Amicus any different from any other stove? Well, the Amicus is the best built of the lot and has a really nice design, but that's not what sets it apart. Soto claims that they have developed a new type of burner head, one that can handle wind better than other stoves. This windproofness would set the Amicus apart from other stoves. So, either the Amicus handles wind better or it's really nothing special. Therefore, wind testing was the major focus of my field testing. Is Soto just "blowing smoke" or are they really on to something here? For this, you’ll want a liquid fuel or four-season stove. We’ve found liquid fuel stoves to be the most reliable choice in winter. Other Considerations We were stunned at how fast bubbles began to dance in the pot, taking as few as just over two minutes to reach a rolling boil (depending on elevation and wind conditions). This makes it a solid choice for group trips where you need to whip up multiple meals fast. It also works great for melting large amounts of snow for water.

Because it uses liquid fuel, this stove does require some TLC and stove knowledge, including priming the stove before use and stove maintenance in the field on longer excursions. As long as you familiarize yourself with the stove, you should be set. The ability to regulate the gas control easily means the BRS-3000T is effective in simmering if required. Again, this stove is better used for shorter amounts of time, so if you are simmering, keep an eye on the pot supports to ensure they’re not getting too hot. This is not a stove you want to cook rice from scratch in a large pot.

Safety

We do not claim to be scientists, though we have tried to make our tests as objective, controlled, and repeatable as possible. We did our testing in a garage at 5000 feet (about 1524 meters), where the boiling point of water is 202.97° F (about 94.98° C). We tested the time it took for one liter of water to make a 1.7-quart kettle whistle with each of the small canister and liquid gas stoves. For the stoves with integrated pots, we tested how long it took for them to reach a rolling boil. With each test, we began with a full 4-ounce fuel canister and weighed it for the wind test. Then after the wind test, we weighed the canister and tested for boiling without wind. All of the fuel bottles were full, and the canisters used were identical. This stove is also unique in that it doesn’t require liquid (white gas or alcohol), pressurized fuel, or wood (collecting wood for fires is banned in some protected wildernesses and parks). The fuel is a solid, noncombustible cube that is fairly easy to light — and you can travel with it!
