Frequently abused by his father, he began developing horrid and macabre interests in his early and mid-teens from an older cousin who taught him military skills that he would later employ during his killing spree. He also cultivated a strong interest in Satanism and the occult. By the time he had left his home in Texas and moved to California at the age of 22, Ramirez began to frequently use cocaine. Ramirez would often commit burglaries to support his drug addiction, many of which were later frequently accompanied by murders, attempted murders, rapes, attempted rapes and battery. Ramirez’s teeth were the most noticeable aspect of his poor hygiene and even contributed to his capture and conviction. According to forensic dentists, nine of his teeth were decayed and several others were missing. This was due to a combination of his poor diet and cocaine addiction. At least two survivors, including Lillian Doi, told police Ramirez had bad teeth following their encounters. There is no connection to other Satanic crimes made in this book, nor probably in any others about the Night Stalker. How the author managed to describe what was going on in Ramirez' head as the crimes were described is beyond me, unless it is gleaned from conversations he had with the Stalker himself after the trial. What is the truth? What was left out? Will we ever know?

Still, the corrective focus on law enforcement, who serve in Night Stalker, as in most crime shows both real and fictional, as the guiding protagonists of the story, has its own limitations. Namely, the persistent centering of police in American crime stories, and the assumption, on TV, that cops are always the main characters – a trope which, inadvertently or not, works to sanitize police work and normalize police as the default good guys, even when America’s grisly record of racist policing, and the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor this summer, indicate otherwise. For a true killer, a good murder is like a good meal: you want to make it last and get the most out of it.
