About this deal

Acrylic is typically a glass substitute, as mentioned previously, and, as a material, it can often outperform glass. For example, acrylic is ten times stronger than glass, but only half the weight. It is more durable and shatterproof, meaning that it will not break into lots of sharp and small pieces like glass.

Do not use on printed, varnished or coated surfaces. Not suitable for polycarbonate or other materials. We're often asked how to look after acrylic and for a shiny, cleaner, more lustrous finish with no smears or smudges we are impressed by Vuplex. It makes coloured plastics vibrant, clear plastics virtually transparent and plastic paints gleaming like new. Vuplex isa product which delivers fast quality results with minimal effort and fuss. It also protects new plastic from scratches and grime and restores plastic which has fine scratches and in ground grime. You will need 3 types of 'wet or dry' water-proof sandpaper. They are sold by 'grit' which measures how coarse a sandpaper is. The more grit, the finer the sandpaper. Have sandpaper with a grit of 180, 320-360 and 600 to hand.

VuPlex ®effortlessly removes stains that other cleaners won’t touch, by applying a micro-layer of protectant, sealing the porous surface. Whether you opt for hot, soapy water or an acrylic cleaner, be gentle and only use light pressure as you wipe. Too much pressure can actually cause scratching. Use a dry soft cotton cloth to dry off the acrylic. Give it a little buff or polish with this cloth too.

Scraping is a good way to remove any machine marks or jagged edges from acrylic. It can be done with a razor blade or sharp scraping tool (a Stanley knife for example). Put your acrylic on a clean, lint-free surface – if it is a small piece of acrylic cover the area with paper towels. If it is a large piece, prop it against a wall or other surface. For more highly polished, shiny edges there are products you can use to help to give a lustrous finish. If you are considering using a such wax or paste be sure to use one that is suitable for acrylic, like Vuplex. Our Trade Counter is open from 8am until 4pm Monday to Thursday and 8am until 3pm on Fridays. We are closed on weekends and bank holidays. That brings us to the end of this guide to caring for and maintaining your acrylic panels and sheets. As you can see, looking after the plastic is fairly easy and not particularly labour intensive.Finish off smoothing the acylic edges with the fine 600 grit sandpaper. Your acrylic should start showing smooth polished edges. Choose threetypes of sandpaper: a coarse one (180 grit), a medium one (320 grit) and a light one (600 grit). Start with the coarse sandpaper and work up to the finest. If your acrylic has deep scratches start off with the coarse 180 sandpaper. If your acrylic has only very light scratches start with the medium 320 grit. A fine coating of wax is applied giving your acrylic plastic surface protection from micro scratching and atmospheric conditions that cause a break down of clarity over time. Start off by wearing cotton gloves and sweep a soft cotton cloth over both sides of your acrylic to wipe away any loose dust or dirt.If your acrylic is large, it might help to prop it against a wall to do this. Smaller pieces of acrylic can rest on a clean, lint-free surface.Your choice of cloth is very important for cleaning acrylic as any rough surfaces can do further damage to the plastic. Clean the surface and apply a little polishing paste. Using a soft, clean cotton cloth or pad, polish the scratched areas using heavy pressure for 2-3 minutes. For deeper scratches repeat application several times. Remove residue with a cloth.
