About this deal

The Guardian described ZZ Top as "part traditional, part contrary, and part of the deep seam of Texas weirdness that stretched from the 13th Floor Elevators through to the Butthole Surfers". [65] Texas Monthly described their music as "loud, macho, greasy, and distorted", with "unrepentant misogynistic references". [66] In the early 1980s, ZZ Top embraced synthesizers and drum machines, drawing inspiration from British electronic acts such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Depeche Mode (while deriving their dance moves from the former). [19] [67] Hill and Gibbons worked as a kind of double act, looking similar and employing simple stage choreography that Hill described as "low-energy, high-impact". The release of the RAW album is supported by ZZ Top’s ongoing RAW WHISKY TOUR which, when all is said and done, will have consisted of more than 100 dates across North America. The tour’s title is a hat tip to both the forthcoming album as well as the recent release of ZZ Top Tres Hombres whisky from Balcones Distilling of Waco, TX, a flavorful 100-proof mash bill of roasted blue corn, malted barley and rye. Beginning with the comparatively obscure Brown Sugar from ZZ Top’s First Album (released three months before the Rolling Stones song of the same name in 1971), and then working through a bunch of gems including Blue Jean Blues, Just Got Paid and I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide, and carrying on to the monster hits Legs and Gimme All Your Lovin’ from Eliminator, the trio embraced their musical legacy in one final, joyful and entirely spontaneous performance, which according to Gibbons they weren’t even aware was being recorded at the time. The current lineup of ZZ Top, with Elwood Francis on bass, has also announced a new tour. The “Raw Whiskey Tour” will cover 50 markets across North America with more dates to be announced soon. RAW, a new album from the original line up of ZZ Top— Billy F Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill — created in a singular circumstance is out now. Billy Gibbons stated in an interview in August 2011 that a new album had been recorded, with initial recording taking place in Malibu, California, before moving to Houston, but was still unnamed and had yet to be mixed and mastered. [39] Gibbons said that the expected release date was sometime in March or April 2012 but, later, a late summer or early fall release date was announced. [39] The album was subsequently released on September 11, 2012. [40]

And finally he said: ‘I’d like to take a moment and go see the physician and see if we can iron out what’s got me on the ropes.’ He returned to Texas and made an appointment to see the doc. And it was that night he went to sleep and it was… lights out. It was just… it was totally unexpected.”

The new album’s liner notes by Gibbons and Beard note of the RAW sessions, “..it was, in a very real way, a return to our roots. Just us and the music, no audience of thousands, no concession stands, no parking lot social hour, no phalanx of tour busses. Just us and the music. We knew right then it was a very special circumstance, all of us in the same place at the same time and what a time it most certainly was!” ZZ Top - Old Grey Whistle Test Session (1980)". During the making of the film, the band got to set up for an afternoon in Gruene Hall, New Braunfels, a honky-tonk that lays claim to be the oldest dance hall in Texas. Away from the crowds, and relieved of the pressure to perform for anyone other than themselves, they casually – but brilliantly – ran through a bunch of songs with an off-the-cuff warmth and spontaneity that sets a new benchmark for ‘live in the studio’ recordings.

Stories We Want You to Read

I enjoyed making the movie,” he allows. “Once I’d got past the initial exchange with the director [Sam Dunn]. I said to him: ‘This sounds like a capital idea.’ However, every story requires an ending. And I said: ‘I hope you’re not trying to bring ZZ Top to a close. Because we’re still going strong.’ He said: ‘Oh no. My aim is to bring the tale forward to the present and let you guys continue moving forward.’ I said: ‘Okay. If that’s the case, we’ll get down to business.’ That’s all very well. But as Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have recently been at pains to point out in relation to Kiss: “You have to know when to quit.”
