I know absolutely nothing about poetry. I am ashamedly completely ignorant. But boy oh boy! Even a heathen like me couldn't fail to be interested by the array of verse on offer here. Yeats, Rafferty, De La Mare and Ted Hughes to name but a few. It has made me determined to develop my knowledge of poetry ( I found Hughes's poems varied, and intriguing, maybe I'll start there?!)

Begin by introducing the book, the project and establishing your poetry environment. Read the introduction written by the Morpurgos, and ‘The Story of This Book’ (p92) – the final section which explains the origins of Where My Wellies Take Me. Reproduce the map of Pippa’s walk as a wholeclass display and use this as the focus for your work. Budgets are tight, but if you keep a few copies of the book permanently on display, children will enjoy dipping into and exploring these on a regular basis. Follow your map and begin reading Pippa’s story. The book can be used as a class reader, but the jump off points are endless. Literacy work on imagery, vocabulary and atmosphere can all be enhanced by the poems – you could even try diary writing as Pippa’s story has a strong first person voice throughout. This is a beautiful and honest winding narrative, taking a donder through fields and hedgerows of poetry from many wonderful people! Pippa is our host, our storyteller, our teacher - a young girl with a passion for the outdoors. The book itself is a more grown up version of the Jolly Postman, with maps to open and secrets hiding behind doors! It never fails to excite the child within. The style of the book and the mixed media used to compile this tactile adventure is probably a bit like Marmite. I loved it. If you would like to escape a little each day, lose yourself in this lovely book! To develop pleasure in reading by listening to, discussing and expressing views about a wide range of poetry (From English National Curriculum: KS1) ResourcesThere are many inspirations for this book, but the importance of an early love of poetry is high on the list. As a child, Clare Morpurgo – who chose the 40 wonderful poems in the book – was encouraged by her head mistress to learn a new poem a week by heart. Michael himself had a mother who instilled a love of poetry by reading to him at bedtimes. It is this experience we want to give to all our children as teachers. Why? For in poetry there is no better way to instil a love of words, ideas and language in our pupils. Take some of your favourite poems to read and share. Children love to see you recite a poem and poetry performance tends to be contagious: once you start, pupils will add more and more to their repertoire. Encourage children to bring in poems they love, or ask them to bring poems their family members love. Give each pupil an old exercise book to decorate and use as a draft scrapbook in which to start collecting any poems they like. My class used to have a Friday afternoon rota where they had the opportunity to share any poem they had found that week. Guess what? They had often learnt these poems by heart, completely independently. Lead children on a walk through the countryside (or other outside area) and ask children to point out anything that interests them, or anything that reminds them of one of the poems in the anthology e.g. a butterfly or ladybird as in Christina Rossetti’s poem Hurt No Living Thing The local area is always a popular option and a walk created locally would mean you could physically map the school’s surrounding. Take note books to sketch and reflect just like Pippa does. Where My Wellies Take Me uses 40 evocative poems to celebrate the wonder of childhood, germinating a love of verse that will stay with pupils for many years to come, says Judy Clark...

His wife, Clare Morpurgo, is the daughter of Allen Lane, founder of Penguin Books. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Olivia Gill is a fine artist who has exhibited her work across the world. Where My Wellies Take Me will be her first work as an illustrator. iv) Even the school grounds would be space enough to focus a walk – perhaps with school-themed poems to match. The girl riding a horse on the front cover, Pippa, takes a well established walk from Aunt Peggy's round the surrounding area depicted on the map in the front of the book ( I have a 'thing' for maps!) As an inspiration and model for pupils’ own scrapbooks and journals, it’s unsurpassed. 1 The place of poetry

iii) The local area is always a popular option and a walk created locally would mean you could physically map the school’s surrounding. Take note books to sketch and reflect just like Pippa does. The project will be remembered by children when they leave school, give them a treasured scrap book they can share with their own children, and plant the poetry seed for life. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow… Where will their wellies take your class this year? The new National Curriculum I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because of the way in which various poems are inter-weaved with Pippa’s story. It made the poetry more relevant and brought attention to the key themes that link these poems which are nostalgia, the country-side and growing up. I think children will be able to relate to this, and it could enable them to see more clearly what the key ideas of each of the poems are. Structured like a scrapbook, or a diary, children can again relate to this, and think of a similar way in which they can construct their own poetry anthology. Whether you’re in Y2 or Y6, there are so many opportunities to explore and use this book for reading, writing and cross curricular work. There are 40 quality poems here and to rush through them would be such a shame. For me, this is an ongoing poetry appreciation project to be explored, worked on and celebrated throughout the year – culminating in the creation of pupils’ own poetry scrapbooks, which they will treasure and share for years to come. Read the introduction written by the Morpurgos, and ‘The Story of This Book’ ( p.92) – the final section which explains the origins of Where My Wellies Take Me. Whether your school is deep within the heart of Devon or in the big city of Manchester, an enjoyable introduction would be to take the recent Newsround Quiz: ‘Do you know where your food comes from?’ (tinyurl.com/tpfoodquiz). After all, one in three of the children who took part in the recent British Nutrition Foundation survey thought that cheese came from plants…Shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2014 - Winner of the English Association 2013 Prize (Fiction 7-11) Best-selling author Michael Morpurgo’s touching story of a young girl’s exploration of the countryside provides a lyrical link for this rich and varied collection of poems about the countryside which have been selected by Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare.Following the story provides a path and introduction to each; they can also be readily appreciated by dipping in and finding familiar and unfamiliar gems. Beautifully produced, the illustrations throughout the book capture the changing seasons and changing moods of the countryside in what becomes, overall, a glorious celebration. Sometimes I discover books I know will be brilliant for a particular class or that will inspire work on a particular theme. Then there are stories I just can’t wait to read because I’m certain the children will be totally captivated. Where My Wellies Take Me by Clare and Michael Morpurgo is all of the above. For me, it is a truly memorable treasure that every single child should have the privilege to experience as part of their primary literacy education. Yes, it really is that special. participate in discussion about ... poems and other works that are read to them and those that they can read for themselves, taking turns and listening to what others say (Y2) As developing readers and writers, pupils need to understand and explore the first part of the writing process – that thought, the spark of an idea, an experience, passion or observation. Morpurgo has always been wonderful at sharing his inspirations, and discussing these with the children is always powerful. You might be surprised to hear that wellies are a popular choice for a night out on the town! Well, we’d love to welcome you to the dancing-in-wellies-club (we’ve yet to make an official title, suggestions welcome!). With a bunch of punchy colours, styles, and designs, amongst all our wellies you’ll definitely find your merry match.
