About this deal

The Claris R2000 & Sora R3000 brifters are identical apart from being 8 vs 9 speed, though Claris is typically supplied with a non-stainless steel shift cable. This is a consumable item you should replace fairly regularly, so it should not be a concern. They weigh around 500 grams. Ultegra has hollow outer chainrings, and is supplied with aluminium chainring bolts, saving around 7g. The Ultegra chainrings (112 + 34g) are cross-compatible with the 105 chainset. The weight is around 675g.

Both groupsets use the same material to make the front derailleur. This is aluminum coupled with a chain guide that is stainless steel and then chrome-plated. Tiagra brakes have also seen a good amount of improvement and an increase in stopping power. However, they aren't of the same quality as 105.The Tiagra 4720 & 4725 shifters are updated models based on the 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace. There is not much to choose between Tiagra & 105. The older RS405 levers might be still found on some bikes- they are much less ergonomic. Both 105 & Tiagra weigh around 620g the pair. However, a triple chainset is only available with Tiagra so that is something Tiagra has over 105. Dual Pivot Brakes I don't understand where the leverage ratio comes in to the degree that the brakes won't work, and thus must be used with... SRAM therefore offers chainring combinations of 46/33, 48/35, and 50/37, plus the Force Wide system has a 43/30 crankset.

Those looking for something sub compact double chainset, the FSA Omega Adventurer range has 48/32 46/30 also 50/34. Unfortunately I can foresee a Phase 4 when the 105 shifters give up the ghost. Will I be able to replace them with new Tiagra shifters and be able to swap between the XT and 105 mechs as the mood takes me? Or is the 'revised cable pitch' a bit of built in obsolescence? The 53/39 chainset is now a rarity outside the professional peloton. The last bike we tested that came equipped with one was in 2017, so we should probably stop calling it a standard crankset, because it isn't. There's apparently a further need for speed among the pros though, because Shimano offers a 54/40 option on the latest Dura-Ace Di2 groupset. That's because, of course, pro cycling is much cleaner these days and without performance-enhancing drugs everyone has slowed down. Yup. Ah-huh.Note, btw, that the q-factor (width between the cranks) of the GRX chainset is only 5mm wider than the Ultegra/Dura-Ace/105 chainsets, and 1mm wider than 4700 chainset, whereas MTB chainsets tend to be around 30mm wider than road. This is of course not related to chainline but is influenced by the tyre width, in that big tyres will mean big q-factors. As you can see there isn't a huge amount of difference in the weight of these two so the biggest difference is that the Tiagra brake levers run a 10-speed system whereas 105 is an 11-speed. The chainsets correspond more to Tiagra and 105 in their weight/construction, not Tiagra and Ultegra. The chainset, called a crankset in some parts of the world, is the name given to the chainrings and the crank arms that turn them. Different chainsets make a big difference to the character of your bike and the way it feels when you ride. It didn't occur to me until afterwards, but on one stage of last year's Ride Across Britain I found it a struggle to keep up with a group who had seemed to be riding at my kind of pace, despite it being flattish, and I wonder whether that was simply down to me spinning a slightly lower gear than the rest of them. Good excuse anyway...

In addition, you can clearly see there the hole for the bolts smaller BCD inner chainring - which in this particular crankset has not been fitted. This is rather like a MTB triple chainset, which bolts the big/middle ring into one hole, and the small ring into a separate hole. A compact chainset has a 50-tooth outer chainring and a 34-tooth inner chainring. This means that the gears are lower (easier to turn, but they’ll progress you a shorter distance per pedal revolution) than you get with a 53/39 chainset (above) with the same cassette. Road bikes with a full Shimano Tiagra groupset are a fair bit cheaper than those that are 11-speed 105 groupsets but if you buy components separately, the cost difference between Shimano 105 and Tiagra isn't that great. Then you have to factor in whether the shifting control levers have one additional position than that found in Tiagra groupsets. Shimano 105 Groupset UpgradesWelcome to the latest edition of road.cc’s comparison of Shimano's popular Tiagra and 105 groupsets. We've taken an in-depth look at the pros and cons of the two groups and listed the best-priced source of components that we can find. When you look at these derailleurs, they are different in appearance. The 105 R7000 groupset uses Shimano's "compact toggle design". The lightness needed in shifting is similar (if not the same) to that of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace setup. edit: just look at side-by-side comparison pictures of older (sis-ratio) derailleurs and the new-line 9000-6800-5800-4700 rds. they hardly have any resemblance in terms of fixing bolt position compared to pivot bolts, and their side plates differ as well. Shimano's Tiagra FC-4700 chainset isn't going to set the world alight, but in this 48/34-tooth guise does make for higher cadence in your top gear and, depending on the terrain, less need for changing to the small chainring. If you live/ride in a fairly flat part of the country and you're in need of a new chainset it's one to consider; personally, I'd prefer a lower climbing gear too.

It's on a Specialized Diverge which has short chainstays so I cannot use the two smallest cogs while in the small chain ring. Not a practrical problem because after the first few low gears it makes sense to be in the large chainring's lowest or second lowest gears of 28.3 gear inches or 32.1 gear inches, respectively. Tiagra is possibly the best-value groupset in Shimano's line-up. You're getting great performance for a fraction of the cost of the higher-end ones, with just a little extra weight. Should one consider a rule of thumb to be that a chainset should not be more than 1 speed higher than the your groupset's speed? The Tourney brakes are ‘Super SLR’, whereas Claris and Sora are ‘New Super SLR’. However you may often find other brands of brake on Tourney bikes.Aside from the chainset, the new shifters are the most visible change from the previous Tiagra groupsets. The gear indicator windows have been lost and the size and shape are much like 105. https://masoncycles.cc/products/insearchof-grx then it boasts HUGE 27.5 x 2.8" or 29 x 2.4" tyres, but it uses a Deore XT 1x chainset, which obviously has massive q-factor and eliminates Shimano's incompatibility between its MTB front derailleurs and its road brifters.
