About this deal

At first, the locals aren't thrilled to see her. After all, it's rural China circa 1932 and they are wary of foreigners. However, over time, her winning ways and bravery endear her to the people and she's accepted as one of them. This 'an interfering woman' not only ran the inn but was appointed foot inspector, ran a school, was a prison reformer and ultimately saved many children's lives when war with Japan broke out a few years later. This is an overall honoring account of a missionary figure. A true giver and lover of people is never a boring subject. Besides, it is inherent that missionaries have adventures. David Livingston is one case in point. There is a treasure trove of other fascinating stories out there, should they be mined and shared.

And yet this is not altogether a bad film. Bergman might not have been the most appropriate choice to play Aylward, yet she still manages to create the feeling of a truly good person, both compassionate and courageous. Donat gives an excellent performance as the elderly mandarin, a conservative figure who gradually comes to accept the necessity for the changes which Lin Nan and his fellow-reformers are trying to bring about in Chinese society. (The film takes a very positive view of the Kuomintang who ruled China at the time, probably because it was made during the Cold war and they were the avowed enemies of Mao's Communists). This was Donat's last film; he died shortly after it was finished. This was Donat’s final film. The man had suffered from chronic asthma all his life and had, consequently, turned down numerous good roles because of it. By the time he was offered the role of the Mandarin of Yang Cheng in this picture he was not only very ill, but almost penniless as well. In fact, the twenty-five thousand pounds he received for his performance would formulate almost the entire contents of his will, for he would die before the film’s release. He may well have been prophesizing his own imminent death when he bid farewell to Gladys in one scene, saying, ‘I fear we shall never see each other again.’ She is truly an inspiration - showing how persistence and not letting anything get in your way will get you your hearts desire.
