About this deal

Dean McDermott reveals he spent Thanksgiving at sober living facility and NOT with Tori Spelling and their kids The Dudleys thrived at the court of Henry VII, but were sacrificed to the popularity of Henry VIII. Rising to prominence in the reign of Edward VI, the Dudleys lost it all by advancing Jane Grey to the throne over Mary I.

He writes beautifully of how Harold Wilson was obsessed with timing his elections around the performance of the England team in World Cups, of Alf Ramsey’s confusion when faced with young men embracing the new hedonism, and of the fan who went to watch a match and ended up with a dart embedded in his nose.

Rita Ora flaunts her jaw-dropping figure in a revealing silver sequin co-ord as she performs at Hits Radio Live in Manchester Edmund’s son John was left to start again from scratch, but by dint of becoming an ally of the King’s second wife, the Protestant Anne Boleyn, he managed to scramble up to the position of Duke of Northumberland. In some respects, I do worry that this book perhaps isn't detailed enough for a non-fiction tome. It is very much a general overview of the dudley family and their relationships with the Tudors, and while it really does get into their heads and under their skin, precisely because of this style of writing it does feel perhaps a little light on historical detail in places. Olivia Culpo shows off her NFL star fiancé Christian McCaffrey's painful bruises and scratches from the 49ers' Thanksgiving win over the Seahawks

While the emphasis does fall on the three 'patriarchs' of the family generations; Edmund, John and Robert, it doesn't just focus on them. It is a proper family affair, with the wives, children, siblings and wider relations all being pulled in to illustrate the tangled web of loyalties, rivalries and relationships that is the Tudor Court. The author has taken the time to tease out stories for most members of this vast brood, so you do get a far more rounded picture than you would from many other sources. Finally, the last section covers 1555 - 1588, with much about the relationship of Robert Dudley and Queen Elizabeth I. This section delves into the many battles fought on the continent and fighting for Philip against the French in 1557 to fighting against Philip in 1588 against the Spanish Armada. Explanations and facts abound about Robert's wooing of Queen Elizabeth, his second (or is that third?) marriage to Lettice Devereux, and stepson Robert and the illegitimate son, Robert, with Douglas Sheffield. Hadn't realized that it was Robert Dudley that wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth to encourage her to visit Tilbury, which gave her the platform for the rousing speech. It's interesting how the bastard Robert Dudley reached the West Indies and claimed Trinidad for Queen Elizabeth while the stepson Robert is the Queen's favorite (for a while, at least), marries Francis Walsingham's daughter, Frances after she is the widow of Philip Sidney, a Dudley heir (mother is Mary Dudley).
