About this deal

This may not be the best choice for older, rowdier puppies, who may try to climb up the sides or gnaw on the netting. But it’s an excellent option for very young puppies who need a safe space to hang out after naps or between feedings. It prevents them from needing to be tethered or secured to a tie-out, so they are comfortable and can still get exercise. They’re usually used to keep dogs secure overnight or if they are alone in the house. Portable models are also available which can be taken on holidays or elsewhere. Dogs come in all different shapes and sizes - so we make sure our products do, too. We offer 3-sided and 4-sided dog playpens with both bar and mesh panels and with the option of a roof for extra shelter. We have purposefully not fitted some with floors, meaning these can be placed on all sorts of surfaces, such as lawns, patios and gravelled areas.

Safe potty training – During potty training (young dogs), you may find that your dog has one or two accidents, this isn’t bad, we all have accidents. But if you’re using a pen, these accidents are all confined to one place rather than dotted around the house. Watch your pet and see how they behave inside the pen at first. Make sure they’re not able to scramble over the top or tip it over. It should be a solid, safe, comfortable place for them to hang out.

Will you have the right dog pen for me?

There are multiple velcro compartments on the sides of the pen that can potentially be used for toys and doggie treats,” said one tester. “And it's spacious enough for almost any dog to roam around in, roll around in and/or sleep within it.” A dog that jumps high and taller dogs will need a pen tall enough to keep them contained. Any dog can learn to escape a pen, so it's important to teach dogs how to settle in their pen and be respectful of the boundaries instead of jumping up at its sides,” Viera says. “Jumping is not the only way dogs escape their pen. Some dogs will also climb over. Spend a little time working with your dog and buy a sturdy and tall pen to prevent these issues." Portability It’s made of coated wire which should help it last, and make it easier to use outside. The pen is easy to set up: Just unfold and latch together with the enclosed clips. It folds flat for storage and to be moved, but it can be heavy, so it likely won’t be something you want to unfold and set up every day. A playpen is a secure area in which your pet can be placed, which prevents them from having freedom in the house if you can’t supervise them temporarily. This is good if you don’t want to risk damage or injury. Your dog can sleep peacefully – If you have small children in the house, you’ll know once they spot an animal sleeping, they just can’t leave them sleeping and have to wake them up. With a pen, this isn’t possible as the dog and child are separated.

The heavy weight makes it great for big or rowdy dogs, but it’s probably not the best choice for traveling. It’s available in a couple of different heights so you can choose based on the current (or projected) size of your puppy. Many people buy puppy pens for their rabbits, yes. These are used indoors as a run area, or outside to keep them safe when out of the hutch. We tested 19 different dog pens in our New York lab, evaluating a wide range of pens for qualities like versatility, stability, and how easy they were to set up. Several models were tested in at-home environments as well. We also spoke to long-time puppy fosters, rescue volunteers, and trainers for additional insight in what you should look for when shopping for a new dog pen. Older and younger dogs – If you have an older dog and are trying to introduce a puppy that is easily excited, it can be hard for the older dog as they don’t have the energy or tolerance for this anymore. Using a pen allows you to keep them separate until they have gotten used to each others presence.

The dog can’t escape – If an exterior door is left open, and you’re occupied elsewhere, the dog is no longer able to escape out of the door without you noticing, instead, they’re safe inside their pen. Dog gates are used to seal off rooms, or sections. This gives your dog the freedom to use a whole space or room, but stop them from going around the whole house. If you have a large breed, buying something suitable for a toy poodle would be pointless. Also bear in mind that your dog may really like their pen so could want to use it as a safe haven even when they are a bit older, in which case it will need to be large enough for them when they grow. While you are busy and occupied, this is the perfect time to use the pen, you shouldn’t just throw the dog into the pen and leave, allow them to enter by themselves by introducing some toys, blankets and maybe a few treats inside. A dog shouldn’t be left inside the pen for extended periods of time (2-4 hours is usually maximum). Longer periods of time can lead to boredom and the dog will probably start whining and possibly creating themselves some bad habits such as chewing and chasing their tail (as cute as this is, it’s still a bad habit). Whenever you are able to supervise your dog, be sure to open the door and let them out, rewarding any good behaviour. Exercise pens (sometimes called “x-pens”) are simple playpens made of metal or plastic. They usually have about six or eight side panels that connect together so the entire pen can be configured in a square, rectangle, or octagon shape. This Frisco pen comes in five different heights, which you choose based on your dog’s size and interest in climbing.Plastic sets a mid-point between price and durability and is also suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Within the house, plastic is many people’s first choices, as they think about the scratches a metal pen may cause to their floors and that metal could potentially become sharp and harm an animal. But, on the other hand, plastic is easily chewable and your dog may chew their way out of the pen and get hold of your favourite slippers. Plastic is a bad choice for puppies or smaller dogs that may be going through teething or just enjoy chewing things. Plastic pens are, however, easily transported. Safe Meals – If you’ve had a dog in your life before, you’ll know that their favourite pass time is to watch you eat and occasionally try and steal whatever they can. With a pen, this can all be avoided as they don’t need to be isolated from the family during meal times, but they are also at a safe distance and soon learn to keep themselves at a distance during meal time. This is especially useful if you have small children that are just learning to feed themselves. Many pens are meant for puppies, so wouldn’t be tall enough if you have an active larger dog. The heights available vary, but we tried to find a range and pens which couldn’t be jumped over. Material Choosing your material all depends on the habits and size of your dog. Choose wisely as this could be the decision between your slippers living or dying. Depending on how you plan on using the pen, you’ll want to make sure your pet has room to move around. If it’s for a puppy, make sure there’s room for a separate sleeping area, a place to play, and a potty spot.

It's important that your dog fits nicely inside the wooden kennel, especially for the ones that love to walk in circles for a few seconds before they lie down or that need space for a few of their favourite dog toys or dog treats to go to sleep. To make sure they fit, you'll want to measure your dog from the top of their head to the bottom of their feet. Then, add around 5 inches to those dimensions. Next, measure them from the tip of their snout to approximately halfway down their tail and add approximately 10 inches to that number. You'll be left with a solid idea of the size of the kennel you should be looking for. Unlike some pens, this one has a step-through door, which makes it easy to walk in when you need to feed your pup or clean up any messes. The door has two sturdy latches which are difficult for pets to open, but sometimes tough for people too.Although the playpen is easy to put together and take apart, it’s bulky when disassembled and doesn’t have a carrying case. You’ll need plenty of storage space when you aren’t using it.
