About this deal

It does not come with a container like the Sage Barista Pro, so if you want to grind coffee for pour-over or anything other than espresso, you'll have to find a container under the grinding chamber. It's an excellent choice for coffee fanatics at any point in their coffee journey.

Because there is no step-less grind adjustment, you cannot make minor adjustments for espresso. The grinder requires little maintenance to stay in good working shape. It's also relatively simple to disassemble while cleaning. This is the aforementioned internal burr adjustment, and it's such a clever, and useful feature, and one I very rarely hear anyone talking about. Out of all the variables in coffee brewing, grind size has the most influence on the quality of the final cup — a slight adjustment can drastically change the flavour.Coffee grinder differ, not just between brands, but between models, and even individual units. The same two grinders made in the same factory on the same day can drastically vary in grind size distribution — as most manufacturers don’t calibrate or align the burrs to such fine margins.

Expert Tip: Every coffee bean is inherently unique. It comes from a specific farm and maybe arabica or robusta ; therefore, it'll grind differently since some beans will be more brittle than others. This is a low-cost grinder, the burrs alone in some commercial grade grinders cost more than this grinder, and some of the grinders at around the one to two thousand pounds mark, or above, will usually, hopefully, produce more consistent particle size. You really will not believe the difference that can make to the taste of your coffee. One great way of doing that is to use a burr grinder. With the Smart Grinder Pro (and the dose control pro, and all of the integrated grinder machines from Sage) the outer burr has a thread, which enables you to shim it by simply adjusting it to one of the numbered settings, from 1-10. You can control the fineness or coarseness of the coffee and you can alter it according to the beans and according to the type of coffee you want to drink. Pre-ground options tend to be limited to fine, medium, or coarse grind, whereas some coffee machines have a virtually limitless number of grind settings. Key specs – Type: Automatic coffee grinder; Burrs: Stainless steel; Controls: 18 position grind; Capacity: 250g; Dimensions (WDH): 150 x 160 x 280mm To test coffee grinders, we start with a large bag of good quality, freshly roasted coffee beans. We then take the time to adjust each grinder’s grind settings to suit a variety of different brewing methods. Whether we’re after a coarse grind for cafetieres, a medium grind for filter coffee, or a fine grind for manual espresso, we look to see if a grinder can produce the kind of consistency which is essential for great-tasting coffee. We also take into account ease of use and cleaning, hopper capacity and any other extra features such as preset dosage sizes or portafilter attachments.

The Mahlkonig EK43 is a strong, well-built machine with appealing looks. But appearances aren't everything. I didn't want an espresso specialist grinder, because I did quite a bit of manual brewing too and I couldn't afford to buy a second grinder for brew, I wanted an all-rounder. I'd ruled out blade grinders, my coffee knowledge definitely wasn't what it is now, but I knew enough by that point to know that while blade grinders are better than nothing, it was a burr grinder I needed. The Mahlkonig EK43 comprises several features that work together to provide a delicate, clean-cut, and flavorful coffee grind. Some automatic grinders are pretty simple: you add beans to a hopper, set the coarseness of the grind and hit a button. Others, however, will have a dial for setting how many cups you want to make or smart, digital controls that allow you to select number of cups, strength or dosage per-cup and the size of the grind, before dispensing the freshly-ground coffee into the filter or espresso machine handle of your choice. If budget is your absolute top priority, you might choose to opt for a blade grinder, and we’ve made it a point to include one in our roundup below. However, if you care about the consistency and quality of your coffee, and particularly if you’re already spending a lot of money on the beans themselves, you should ultimately choose a burr grinder for the best result. We're not talking about bells and whistles, either. A couple of the features could possibly be referred to as unnecessary I suppose, although I can't think of any that I don't think are useful, but some of them are genius, one of them in particular, which is the internal burr adjustment, which I'll talk about shortly. Below are a list of the brew methods displayed on the chart, with descriptions and reasoning for their grind size values. Turkish coffee When grinding your coffee for a particular method, there will inevitably be particles that will be smaller or bigger than the range. Don’t worry though, as the range is not intended to be the boundary of coffee particle distribution, but where the majority of grounds should lie. Beyond this, the two grinders are similar, with a glass container that can be unscrewed from the grinder itself. However, here the handle is attached to a lid, which will need to be slotted on top of the hopper. This prevents any bean fragments from escaping mid-grind. It’s pretty secure, but it’s important to take care when grinding (this means keeping it upright in your hands, unless you want coffee beans all over the floor).

Due to the long brewing time and the cold temperature of the water, the grind size for cold brew should be very coarse, we’ve set the chart to 800-1400 microns, but some methods go even higher. Cold drip This ensures a consistently high-quality grind compared to most coffee grinders in the market. It also has micrometric ring nut adjustment for extra precision and grinds settings. The LCD helps you monitor the coffee you grind. I was using the double shot basket, so it was obvious to me that I needed to press the 2 shots button. By the way, the reason the text “shots/cups” appears under this button, if you're grinding for espresso the digital screen will display “shots” allowing you to toggle between 1 and 2 cups, for the single or double shot baskets, and if you're grinding for manual brew methods this will change on the screen to “cups”. Have I mentioned how smart this grinder is!? 😉Coarse grounds are recommended for cold drip to avoid any fine grounds which could make the coffee taste over-extracted. Unlike cold brew, going too coarse can hasten the brewing process that is meant to last many hours. We recommend a grind size of 820-1270 microns. The difficulty with measuring coffee grind size The Eagle one prima coffee machine is an excellent buy with the Victoria Arduino mythos coffee grinder. The machine's cool touch steamer, intuitive design, and app's control setting make it a perfect investment.
