About this deal

The confusion with rabbits and the whole nocturnal thing is probably because rabbits are crepuscular. A cute little fact, but an important one for many rabbit owners. It means rabbits are most active in the waning hours of daylight. As with many animals, however, they tend to be more active at sundown when living creatures are most active, so as day turns to night they’ll be sleeping more and, well… you get the idea. So when you see your rabbit thumping its feet in the evening, you know what’s going on 🙂 Say it with us, crepuscular not nocturnal 🙂 Anything Else to Know about Rabbits and Sleep?

Rabbits are animals known to have intense dreams, as they are often seen trashing and fidgeting while sleeping. These rapid body movements are called sleepwalking, and are thought to be related to dreams. Their twitching nose stops: typically, rabbits’ noses do not move while they are asleep. A rabbit’s nose will twitch more the more attentive it is. If they are feeling safe, then the rabbit is able to relax a little bit more and close its eyes. This means that for domesticated rabbits, it will be rare to see them with their eyes open when they sleep. Rabbit Sleeping Patterns and Daily Routine rabbits.life Frequently Asked Questions Do rabbits dream while they sleep? In actual fact, this is a compliment from your rabbit. They will only flop over and go to sleep if they fully trust you and feel comfortable with you. About a tenth of the time the rabbits were in what the scientists termed ‘paradoxical sleep’ – this is similar to REM sleep in humans, and may be an indication that this is when the bunnies are dreaming! See below for more on this. When your rabbit is sleeping, it is important to ensure that he has a calm and quiet environment to sleep in. As tips, we encourage you to provide them with a comfortable and safe place to rest.

Consider the height of your bed. You also need to think about how easy it is for the bunny to get on and off the bed. If yours is really low to the floor, it may be fine, but a standard bed height is high for a rabbit to be expected to jump up or down. A baby rabbit, whether wild or domesticated, will sleep 20 or more hours a day. It nurses to sleep once daily. As the kit grows, they’ll gradually sleep less and less. What Do Rabbit Sleeping Positions Mean? A common misconception is that rabbits are nocturnal creatures. While you may find that your bunny is a bit more active during the evening hours, this is not always going to be the case.

We recommend feeding the rabbit one of the different types of hay listed above. Don’t give them any legume hay unless they are pregnant, nursing, or growing: it’s not good for a rabbit’s health as it contains a higher amount of protein and calcium. The same goes for the straw. Pellets are allowed, but only in small portions, making up around 5% of their daily diet. Green leafy foods (broccoli, parsley, asparagus, and lettuce, to name a few) are also important and should make up for around 10% of their total daily food intake. They’re nutrient-rich and contain water.

Again, this is a natural instinct. Sure, they know that you are their owner (hopefully), but you do not want to scare them.

Rabbits may also sleep in their litter boxes because it’s their safe space. Sleeping and “using the toilet” are the most vulnerable moments of any animal’s day. So, it makes sense that your rabbit would sleep somewhere he already feels safe. But how do you know when your bunny is sleeping? The scientists used sophisticated polygraphic recordings, but our pet bunnies aren’t wired up. It can be hard to tell if your rabbit is simply lying still, or actually asleep. Most people feel like they can only get proper rest if they sleep in the same bed and at the same time. Well, that’s not the case with rabbits! They can fall asleep pretty much anywhere as long as that spot is safe, relatively soft, and a bit dark. Wild bunnies often snooze in burrows (dug out “bunkers”). If they find a similar setup indoors (a dimly lit, cushy area), best believe they’ll fancy it over other spots in the house. The nose won’t be twitching. Rabbits wiggle their noses all the time while they’re awake, but not when asleep.

They may lay on their tummy or their side, and you’ll see their tail and hind legs are sprawled or stretched out behind them. The rabbit’s head will rest in front of them by their front limbs; however, your bun may also keep its head upright.

Rabbits are nocturnal animals, which means they sleep most of the time during the day and are active at night. Their lifestyle can be a little confusing for rabbit owners, as they may seem to sleep much more than other pets. But in reality, rabbits need it to rest and prepare for a night of activity.
