Three-quarters of people in the UK say they eat porridge and a third eat it every week - but despite it containing just two ingredients, more than half (53%) of UK adults say they struggle to get it right, according to new research from Quaker. According to the research for World Porridge Day on October 10 , and the 29 th annual ‘Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship’ in Scotland this weekend, 40% of UK adults find the breakfast dish difficult’to cook. The first involved adding everything straight to the slow cooker pot and leaving it to cook that way, the other was placing the ingredients in a bowl and placing that within the slow cooker to cook. You can choose between small and large portions and, if you fancy adding a little extra flavour or texture, there are suggestions for yummy taste combinations and toppings on the side. You can add to the health benefits by adding berries or dried fruit to your morning porridge. How To Make Perfect PorridgeMix the oats and liquid together in a microwave safe bowl. Don’t fill it all the way to the top to allow for the mixture to bubble up and rise a little during the cooking time. Grandad would always sprinkle his porridge with granulated brown sugar and insist that you wait a minute and a half for it to pull out the moisture from the porridge and turn it into a bizarrely impressive caramelly glaze. I loved this, but I couldn’t help opting for a good spoonful of golden syrup instead. What I found extraordinary was the way that over a couple of minutes, with a little jiggling of the bowl, the syrup would always creep down around and underneath the porridge, elevating it as if it were some sort of floating island. It baffles me to this day how that works, but I love it. You can use instant oats, but rolled oats would be better – instant oats will turn out a bit mushy. I have also made this during the day time, using rolled oats (Scottish) and it was ready in 1.5 hours (runny consistency). This is a great option if you are an early riser and plan on getting breakfast on the go early ready for when everyone else wakes up!

The great thing about overnight oats is how you can make so many different flavours, depending on what you add in. Try adding, peanut butter, cocoa powder, chopped fruits, fruit syrups, cinnamon, honey – the combinations are endless! And on that note comes the final vital tip – you need those oats to break down, and the best way to do that is stir until your arm seizes up. In Scotland they have special pointed porridge spoons, but the wrong end of a wooden one will do. It should cook for around 15 minutes, but it will start to go soft and stodgy after around 5 minutes, so you can start taste testing from then. Claire Molyneux, Senior Marketing Manager at Quaker, said: “Michael is no stranger to fierce competition, and he’ll be up in Scotland at the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship as our ambassador, this weekend. Microwave and Dishwasher Safe - Tea mug or soup mug gone cold? No worries! With our microwave-safe ceramic mugs, you can reheat your food or drink in a jiffy. These are also dishwasher safe mugs, so they’re easy to clean. The next key point is the dilution. One big mug of oats will serve four, and you’ll need three mugs of water – that’s right, water – for each mug. Get it all in a pan over a high heat and bring to a boil, then turn it right down to a low simmer. Quaker has teamed up with TV baker and porridge aficionado Michael Chakraverty, to provide his top tips and recipes.

Breakfast might be the most important meal of the day, but it’s also the one most of us have least time to make or linger over. But for last minute scoffers or skippers, help is at hand – our Overnight Oats Mug lets you prep ahead and make a delicious banana-nut or choco-berry oaty mix the evening before. Fill half of the mug/cup with the porridge oats and add them to the saucepan. Then fill it completely with your choice of liquid and add that to the saucepan. Stir it together.

How Many Calories In Porridge?

Do fill the used pan with cold water and a little washing up liquid as soon as you have served it into the bowl. This keeps the residue moist and helps to prevent it setting hard. In fact it is the avoidance of the pan washing that turns many porridge breakfasters to the microwave! With good stirring and and an immediate soaking, the pan washing up shouldn’t be too much of a trial! More Oat Recipes Elevating a basic porridge doesn’t need to be time-consuming – try toasting the oats in a saucepan until they're fragrant, before making your porridge as normal. This provides a smoky warmth to your porridge, which is perfect for the Autumn.”
