About this deal

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Our unique copper stills are charged with a fermented barley 'wash'. This is distilled to produce a flavourful spirit of extraordinary strength and purity which is married with water from the Brecon Beacons before maturing in the finest ex-bourbon casks. Final Thoughts: This is a very intriguing whiskey. The nose is fantastic, if just for the mystery I found in it. The normal Portwood finish flavours are certainly there, but there is much more going on as well. While not bad, by any means, I did find it a bit disappointing to sip. The body just wasn’t quite there to support those deep, brooding fruit and spice notes. While definitely a pleasant experience, the nose certainly set expectations a bit high for what the body could actually deliver. Penderyn Welsh Whiskies (Gold Range) (image via Penderyn) Tasting Notes: Penderyn Peated Single Malt Penderyn Legend is matured in specially reserved ex-bourbon casks made from American Oak, before receiving a further maturation in oak barriques that have previously held Madeira wine, to develop a harmonious single malt whisky with a subtle but sophisticated character and soft golden hues. Penderyn whisky has been on the market since 2004, and they are currently the only Welsh whisky maker that I am aware of. Note that they also produce a number of non-whisky liqueurs and spirits. Not exactly a house-hold name, Penderyn is known to focus on select international markets – including Taiwan, Australia and France. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Any new functionalities, tools and features shall be part of and governed by the Terms from the moment they are launched and/or available. Further, we reserve the right to modify, change, discontinue the Service, add or remove features, update the Service, change its appearance, temporarily and permanently, at any time, in whole or any part thereof.

Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. There’s a bit of alcohol burn and some slightly dusty wood tannins but overall a vast improvement from the Peated expression. Layers of delicate fruits, marzipan and lightly sweet breads with some baking spices for character make this enjoyable through the last. As whisky continues to boom and more distilleries open all over the world, it’s not surprising that Wales has a number of new distilleries, too. One such distillery is Aber Falls in the north, which is owned by Halewood Artisinal Spirits, better known for their independently bottled brands such as Crabbie and American Eagle. Their first single malt was released on the 17 th May this year, made entirely in Wales using 100% Welsh barley, and is limited to 2000 bottles.

Score : 4/10

A limited number of casks are available at any one time, and are offered on a first come, first served basis. This is a wonderful way to secure your personal supply of our award-winning whisky, and furthermore, a cask could be a fine gift to mark a very special occasion. Their casking regime perhaps has more in common with the titans of Irish whiskey than their Scottish neighbors, leaning heavily on bourbon barrels for the primary maturation of their whiskies. This is also a tribute to the rich history of distillation in the region. Evan Williams, the iconic bourbon producer, was of Welsh extractation and his family had a distillery in Pembrokeshire . Penderyn uses a large number of Evan Williams bourbon barrels for its primary maturation, keeping the cycle (and history) alive.

It is thought that the ancient Welsh kings were using the dragon as a royal emblem by the early 5th century AD. In this they followed Roman cohorts that carried hollow metal 'draco' standards, through which the wind howled, to instill fear in their foes. On the nose: A sweet and very fruity nose with lots of sharp, bright lemon, honeydew melon, banana, toffee apple, rich sultana and vanilla cream. There is an earthy petrichor note too along with acetone nail polish remover. Penderyn Distillery was at one point one of the only distilleries in the region, and it is now the figurehead and standard bearer for Welsh whisky. The Welsh Whisky Company, Penderyn’s company name, brought its first whisky to market in 2004. Since then it has enjoyed exceptional growth and garnered quite a bit of both regional and international acclaim. Stylistically, Welsh whisky as a category is a bit hard to define, not least due to the very limited sample size relative to other major whisky producing regions. Penderyn’s house style is most reflective of its choice of still and casking regimen. Penderyn utilizes a Faraday still for the majority of their distillations, rather than the more common ‘lantern’ pot stills, resulting in a much higher alcohol white whisky than most whisky distilleries. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. It’s basic and light, but has a nice round essence that’s pleasant and fun. Overall it’s warm and pleasant and the waxy fruit character of the aroma, palate and finish remind me of young Clynelish. It’s not super deep or complex, but there aren’t any off notes either, nor is it boring. Penderyn Legend is definitely something I could sip on any day of the week.

This is my first review of a whisky from the Welsh producer Penderyn. There is a long tradition of whisky making in Wales – but it apparently took the 20th century off (i.e., the last maker shut down in 1894). Founded in 2000, the Welsh Whisky Company restarted production in the village of Penderyn (from where they take their name). No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. This is much better. The palate has a better balance and fuller flavour, possibly thanks to the higher ABV. I’d suggest this would be a better option if you want an introduction to the distillery, especially when you consider the relatively small price difference. Score: 6/10 Penderyn Legend is the new name for our classic Penderyn house style at 41% abv, our single malt whisky with a light Madeira barrique finish. Penderyn continues to grow. In 2014, an expansion to the distillery was put in motion, with a pair of pot stills, a copper pot still and mashing facilities being commissioned. Two new distilleries are opening soon, one in the north and one in Swansea in the south, and it has begun to make serious inroads into the export market – having recently gone into China, Japan, Russia and the US.
