About this deal

Although we’re hoping to see a bit more variety in Nikon’s midrange Z lens lineup – especially some pancake lenses to take advantage of the Z7 II’s light weight – the current coverage is solid. Nikon also has a 24-105mm zoom, 28mm f/2.8 pancake, and 40mm f/2 pancake lens planned on their roadmap, and they’ve specifically said that the 28mm and 40mm lenses will be released before the end of 2021. NIKON Z 6 II + NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S @ 34.5mm, ISO 100, 1/200, f/5.6 Telephoto Z Lenses

High maximum reproduction ratio of 39x at the maximum telephoto position and a short minimum focus distance of 0.35m (at the max wide-angle), letting users get close and shoot small subjects in large size. With no tripod mount protrusion, the FTZ II doesn’t restrict access to the Z 9 camera’s integral, vertical grip. Large, heavy lenses tend to have their own tripod mounting collars anyway. (Image credit: Nikon) Verdict It if fairly clear what Nikon is saying by not putting a AF motor in Z bodies and not having an adapter with an AF motor. It is my impression that Viltrox has put in an effort to make the adapter work with lenses with built in AF motors (AF-S and G), including image stabilization and obviously EXIF information. I have been shooting with the 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens extensively, and it works like a charm. I have also used it with my wide 16-35mm f/4 G ED and although I felt the AF was a tad slower than with the Nikon adapter, it also worked really well (speed of AF with a wide lens is not critical to me). The Viltrox NF-Z mount adapter. Notice both the USB-C plug bottom left on the adapter and also the button next to it, reserved for future appliances.Any FX DSLR works much better with manual focus lenses, adding correct EXIF data and faster electronic focus aids absent with this adapter. Then again, use this adapter on mirrorless and you can shoot silently with VR and much better see the limited depth-of-field with lenses shot wider than f/2.5 than you can on DSLRs. Any camera and mount adapter firmware updates must be performed before the firmware for F mount lenses can be updated.

The most popular lenses in a given system tend to be those that cover the midrange focal lengths – roughly between 28mm and 70mm on a full frame camera like the Z6 II. There are nine Nikon Z lenses which do so: Features a design with consideration for video recording, including effectively reduced focus shift. Many photographers who are considering the Z6 II are existing Nikon shooters with a collection of F-mount glass. The good news is that most Nikon lensescan be used on the Z6 II very easily with Nikon’s FTZ adapter (see the full compatibility list here), pictured below attached to the Nikon Z7: F2 DG HSM | Art ( Previously, had an issue where it would occasionally “stop recording” when shooting video, according to Sigma.) falconeyes, said "Having an AF motor in the body was a brilliant idea". Wow, I guess that is why the AF motor in the body is prevailing tech now, huh? While there may be some mechanical interference with some lenses that prevent them from mounting on the adapter, if you safely can attach an ancient pre-AI lens, it works exactly the same as the manual focus AI converted, AI, AI‑s& Series E Lenses above. It’s also useful for plugging the remaining gaps in Nikon’s Z-mount lens line-up with F-mount substitutes. For example, there’s no native Z-mount compact telephoto zoom for full-frame cameras, nor a fairly inexpensive 105mm macro lens. F-mount lenses like the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR and Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro fit the bill nicely, while the 125g weight and 70mm length of the FTZ don’t add much bulk.

There are no electronic manual focus aids other than Focus Peaking and Magnifiers. The selected focus area always stays red and there are no arrows or dots at the bottom of the finder. One of the big differences in terms of appearance is that the Viltrox adapter has a USB-C connector, which enables you to install new software updates in case Nikon releases new software for their camera bodies or lenses, that the Viltrox software needs to adapt to. Also, the Viltrox adapter has a button prepared for future use – right now I don’t think it has a function. So the Viltrox adapter is pretty well equipped to deal with future changes, provided of course that they will continue to develop the software for the adapter. PriceShooting with AE is possible with approx. 360 types of NIKKOR F lens from AI type onwards, while shooting with AF/AE is available with 94 types of AF-P/AF-S/AF-I lenses. To perform the update, you will need the memory card used in the camera and a compatible card reader. The Z cameras automatically apply a DX crop and everything looks great as you shoot; unlike with a DSLR, the DX image always fills the finder.

Using a card slot or card reader, copy “MAFTZ0110.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera. The Viltrox adapter for Nikon Z-mount enables you to use your Nikon F-mount glass with Nikons mirrorless cameras, such as the Nikon Z6 or the Nikon Z50. It is intended to work exactly like the FTZ adapter from Nikon, making it possible for you to use your F-mount glass on a Nikon Z mirrorless camera body. When a message is displayed stating that the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.

This, of course, is a godsend if you are transitioning from Nikon DSLRs to Nikon mirrorless and hoping to take your glass with you. It’s also advantageous if you wish to use exotic glass yet to appear on the Z mount, such as F-mounts large telephoto lenses and tilt-shifts. All of Sigma’s newest lenses have a built-in autofocus motor, so they will autofocus with the Nikon FTZ adapter without issue. (This includes every lens listed above.) However, some of the oldest and discontinued Sigma lenses do not have a built-in motor, so they will not autofocus with the FTZ.
