I preferred it to Master and Commander by far. Horatio Hornblower is just a teenaged midshipman here, an intelligent and sensitive overthinker who sort of reminds me of a shy, grumpy puppy. Even though he would be mortified and offended to hear it. He's just so self-conscious and burdened despite all of his natural ability. Regardless of any shortcomings, the series is still one of my favorites and this is a great send off to a wonderful voyage! Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, Lieutenant Hornblower, and Hornblower and the Atropos were compiled in one book, variously titled Hornblower's Early Years, Horatio Hornblower Goes to Sea, or The Young Hornblower. Hornblower and the Atropos was replaced by Hornblower and the Hotspur in later UK editions of The Young Hornblower.
