About this deal

This book was set in the world of snowboarding, and to a lesser extent surfing, both of which use similar skills. The two main characters are Clover and Kit. Clover is an award winning documentary maker, currently riding high with her documentary about Cory, a champion surfer who had a terrible accident that ended his career and changed his whole life, due to the actions of fellow champion surfer, Kit. But really it's not specifically about the sports themselves, so don't worry if you don't know your olly from your cab, your switch from your goofy, (and if some of those are more skateboarding than snowboarding terms then sorry but I was hooked on watching that too!), then honestly the sports technical bits are only a small part of the book itself. It's clear Kit has been pressganged into it and they both appear to hate each other with a passion, and what I found fascinating was seeing just how Kit's character and personality developed, as we incredibly slowly start to learn a bit more about him. An amazing gift for taking you to fabulous locations & gradually unwrapping secrets about her characters’

The sport side of things did not interest me a bit, so the fact that I held on to it all through this story and was still entertained speaks volumes about the character relationships. The dynamics were really interesting and, even though I could pretty much guess where everyone was going to end up, I enjoyed the way it played out. I did really enjoy getting to know these characters. There's a big predictability factor and you'll have met many of these characters before in various forms, but I did really enjoy the way they shaped this story. There is, as always, a little bit of mystery behind the story as well, and I greatly enjoyed discovering the clues and solving the questions. This book was an out of body experience. And that set up—are you kidding me? Immediate emotional investment. You obviously know from the blurb going into this that Clover's romantic entanglement is with the villain of this story. I've read a couple of Karen Swan books, and have thoroughly enjoyed them, so when I saw this, I was compelled to read, purely on previous experience. Some might be put off by the extent to which the story extended itself past romance. It had so much love in it, don't get me wrong—the love of friends, of family, of persevering, but romantic love factored in quite a bit less than I was expecting. In a search to find answers, Clover uncovered something she wasn’t expecting to find. There’s a lesson in that for us, too.

My best friend and I have a tradition going on that we read a cheesy, often also boring christmassy book together - like those really lame christmas hallmark films but in bookform. This opinion is brought to you by someone notorious for disliking romance, so be prepared to add a star or two if you're into this sappy stuff. :) Nuostabi! So colour me surprised, when I start reading Midnight in the Snow, expecting that kinda book (shallow opinion based on coverdesign, I know, I KNOW) AND JUST. CAN. NOT. STOP. 🤭 Set amongst the snow-covered mountains of the Austrian Alps, Midnight in the Snow is the story of a forbidden attraction that will reveal long-buried secrets, f rom Sunday Times bestselling author of Christmas at Tiffany's, Karen Swan.

This story began as a seed ten years ago when Swan watched ‘The Crash Reel’ based on Kevin Pearce’s snowboarding accident while training for the 2010 Winter Olympics. She wanted to explore how life changing the risks can be when things go wrong. For anyone who enjoys these winter sports, they know how one degree and one second can make all the difference. A little difficult to get into at first, Swan’s book also explores what is required to be a winner, what it’s like to live with public disgrace, and what it’s like to forever be the villain. Swan’s novel is a testament to her research into these winter sports and locations. She unravels the human psyche and the catalyst for our interactions, mixes it with a winter sport, some mystery, some romance, and sets it against spectacular scenery! Can someone please inform Ms. Swan that this was supposed to be a shallow Hallmark channel Christmas romance? But as she delves deeper, Clover finds herself both drawn to Kit, and even more convinced he’s hiding something. Is Kit Foley really as cold as he seems? Having got herself extremely close to the family, she feels a need to try and find out why things happened as they did, ultimately leading to the loss of life. The writing is effortless and smooth. The characters are multilayered, withdrawn, infuriating, and dedicated. And the plot is an entertaining mix of hope, heart, angst, drama, and mystery.
