About this deal

THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR is a story about love and connection, but also about the beauty and cruelty of it,” said Andrade. “Ram writes beautiful words touched by a mystic and exotic perfume. I want to transport and involve the reader in this trippy and vibrant world.” In response to the overwhelming support from retailers and fans, BOOM! Studios has announced THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR #1 THIRD PRINTING, featuring a new cover by series artist Filipe Andrade, available in stores May 26, 2021.

THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR is a strange, funny, odd and occasionally morbid comic about death, love, innocence and the human condition. Where I come from, gods are flawed, perhaps more so than people. Life is an endless cycle of trying to get things right, and death? Death is only the beginning,” said Ram V. “Judgments are few and far between and all things are rife with contradictions as they should be. So Filipe Andrade and I would like to welcome readers to this near-future Mumbai, this immensely beautiful mess of human lives where a god must first contend with death…many deaths, before she may begin to understand a thing or two about life.” I feel the same way about the work I do on these big characters as well. I do get a lot of fandom reactions. Most of the time, they’re really nice, in that people have really enjoyed the work. Sometimes they are a bit negative because someone expected something and they didn’t get that. But largely all of that is like, “Huh, cool,” and then it’s done. James Tynion IV, House of Slaughter, Something Is Killing the Children, Wynd (BOOM! Studios); The Nice House on the Lake, The Joker, Batman, DC Pride 2021 (DC); The Department of Truth (Image); Blue Book, Razorblades (Tiny Onion Studios)Given music is so central to much of your work, what do you think about the comics-as-music school of thought? On a more creative aspect, I think good storytelling always pushes to create some form of synaesthesia. In that, you start blurring the lines between “Am I reading something? Am I hearing something? Am I touching something?” Good prose does that as well, so there’s no reason good comics shouldn’t. And uniquely, because of this technical relationship with music, there’s a possibility of making people hear things in comics, which is unusual, and so I like using that. So I think that ties in really well with my love of music.

THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including BRZRKR by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney; We Only Find Them When They’re Dead by Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo; Seven Secrets by Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo; Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera; Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Faithless by Brian Azzarello and Maria Llovet; and Abbott by Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties, including Dune: House Atreides from Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and Dev Pramanik; Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Jordie Bellaire and David López; Firefly from Greg Pak, Lalit Kumar Sharma & Daniel Bayliss; and Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers series from Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, and Francesco Mortarino. The first issue is fairly solid but, once Death immediately decides to about-face on the plan, the story meanders pointlessly until the very end. It’s unexciting reading for the most part and, without giving anything away about that finale, it’s unsatisfying and dripping with vapid New Age sentiment. Thought-provoking, touching, and bittersweet, this was a worthwhile exploration of life, death, and all that they could mean. The concept is solid, steeped in theology, mythology, and contemplations of life and death. I especially enjoyed the way all of this was grounded in the goals, reactions, and desires of the book’s characters. It was in this way not entirely unlike one of my favorite comics of all time, Sandman. All that aside, however, it’s the execution and craft that really bring this comic to life…and gorgeously so.If you look at all the issues, they’re looking at the idea of Death in different contexts, right? Like issue 2 with Bardhan in it is the death of someone you perceive is from a completely different world as compared to you. With Issue 4, which is the one with the Chinese Temple, that one is a death of a certain type of city. In that, I’m commenting on how a lot of Indian society has changed over time. Julian Totino Tedesco, Just Beyond: Monstrosity (BOOM!/KaBoom!); Dune: House Atreides (BOOM! Studios); Action Comics (DC); The Walking Dead Deluxe (Image Skybound)

In Mumbai, apparently such beings as Death and God work in a high rise office setting. Death is called to God's office to be let go, bc there's a baby being born that will bring eternal life and therefore making Death's job unnecessary. With the idea that you're reinventing yourselves with each issue across The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, how challenging and exciting is that creatively? Marvel Comics Library: Spider-Man vol. 1: 1962–1964, by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, edidted by Steve Korté (TASCHEN) Best continuing series featured Bitter Root–a multi-nominated series at this point– The Department of Truth, Something is Killing the Children, Nightwing, and Immortal Hulk. When it comes to publishers, Dark Horse Comics came away with five nominations and IDW/Top Cow came away with twelve nominations, Marvel had 13 (with two more of their properties nominated by Taschen as well), DC Comics with 22 and Image Comics had 16. BOOM! Studios came away with 10 nominations. All of those figures include solo creator nominees who had work listed under those publishers.
