About this deal

As the iRig HD 2 comes with the full version of AmpliTube 4, I was curious how easy the process would be to get it up and running. Here are the steps I went through to get my full version of AmpliTube 4: Once you get a feel for the amps, startexperimenting with different mics, cabinets and rooms. Learn the difference between a dynamic and condenser microphone and learn how the placement of the microphone affects your tone. Try different combinations of microphones and rooms. The goal here is to learn how each component affects your final tone. This takes a long time to learn in the studio, so you have an advantage learning it in AmpliTube. As we leap to the other end of the price spectrum, consider how much you’re willing to spend to get a volume control as satisfying to look at as the Twin Duo X’s. But sleek aesthetics aren’t the only thing this Universal Audio interface offers – Thunderbolt operation means ultra-speedy performance, and the ability to Cascade up to 4 Apollo interfaces and 6 UAD-2 devices over Thunderbolt. I’m a guitarist who enjoys recording my own music and AmpliTube 4 offers a lot of great optionssuch as a range of cabinets, speakers, mics and rooms. As shown above you can even change individual speaker selection. Everything you see in the above screenshot can be customized and switched around. In other words, it’s like having access to a full studio and being able to instantly switch between different rigs, rooms and gear. The successor to IK Multimedia's popular iRig HD, the iRig HD 2 guitar interface features all the capabilities of its predecessor, along withsome interesting newfeatures.

computer monitor, and/or adapters plugged in that are creating noise loops. I have the same setup as yours, ipad and hd 2, it's all as super quiet as possible As you can see from the image below, there are quite a few newfeatures in the iRig HD 2 compared to the first iRig HD: Some audio interfaces also allow you to plug in a microphone via an XLR input, power condenser mics via phantom power, and some even offer MIDI capabilities. Even without that concern, it’s a lot of work to get all my gear together just to play for 20 minutes. This is where the beauty of the iRig HD 2, and the entire concept, really shines through. With that interface, I need only my guitar and a laptop or phone. If you’re new to recording gear, 96kHz is basically overkill in terms of recording quality. You will see high-grade professional gear at 192kHz, but the general consensus is that there’s no benefit to going that high. 96kHz is perfect for excellent quality recording.

With the iRig HD 2, the LED changes color from blue (low signal) to green (good signal), orange (high signal) and finally red when the signal is clipping. So if you’re constantly seeing orange and red, you know the signal is too high. Alternatively, if you’re constantly seeing blue you know to turn the gain dial up. Overall, the iRig HD 2 is a very flexible device that will suit a lot of people. The fact that it comes with the full version of AmpliTube 4 (PC/Mac or iOS) makes that a great value device. What I had planned to do is use the iRig as a DI – i.e the guitar signal goes into the iRig – the iRig ‘splits the signal’, sending it direct (via USB cable) to the iMac; and via ‘guitar lead’ to the front of the totally clean guitar amp (via a pedalboard). Two microphones are sitting in front of the amp’s speaker – tightly together to alleviate possible phase issues. Therefore, the earth-loop(?) noise that the iRig introduces to the signal is totally audible – and of course, totally unacceptable. The reason I feel this flexibility is important is that it allows you to use it in many different situations.

As I previously mentioned, the best "feature" of the iRig HD 2 is the convenience and ease-of-use you get from being able to play guitar through your computer or mobile device. I could utilize lots of effects and amp models on my couch, while my wife watched TV and my kids slept soundly. You might have to experiment with these settings to get the mix sounding right or to avoid clipping. However, while testing the unit, I didn’t have much trouble finding workable spots for both volume and gain. Sound Quality and Tone While the iRig HD 2 is class compliant with the Mac OS, I still had to set things up so it could "talk" with the sound i/o device and amp modeling software. It sounds complex, but the setup process is really simple. In a Mac, go to Settings - Sound and set the iRig HD 2 as both the default input and output device. Do You have iRig 2 or iRig HD2? the first is analog, the second digital. Are you trying to use it with a Windows system (You mention ASIO4ALL)? Many of these features were sorely needed from earlier versions of the iRig (as well as other products).

The Bottom line

Please follow these steps to setup your device on Windows. Please note that there are interfaces that may not work properly with the below steps: In other words, the sound quality of the iRig HD 2 is exactly what you want it to be. It allows you to record with excellent clarity or jam away without affecting your tone negatively. Also, the latency is so low that it’s no longer an issue compared to audio interfaces in the past. I spent time with the iRig both on PC and iPad and both felt perfectly responsive.

What settings are needed? I have massive noticeable latency and that is NEVER mentioned in the vast majority of videos on setting these up. The vids make it look so dang easy when it clearly isn't.The iRig HD 2 is essentially a plug and play device. Simply connect it using the appropriate cable (lightning and USB cables included) and you’re good to go.
