About this deal

Stay ‘shiny’ Firefly fans! ‘ Firefly: The Board Game’ is here to fill the hole in your heart left by the series. Firefly is a game that is dripping in theme, matching the tone of the show well and dropping in plenty of easter eggs and references to keep even the most hardcore fans appeased. Gameplay ‘They'll take any job, legal or illegal, to keep fuel in the tanks and food on the table.’ So maybe that was just a coincidence. We get together another time and play one of the other box scenarios. And I learn how to break the game and win every time. Do you want to know how to do it? Seriously, in the next couple sentences I will spoil the game for you, and give you the secret to winning. Are you sure you want to know? Yes? Yes? SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Over a decade ago, a little known TV show premiered on the FOX network called Firefly. As any fan of the show (Browncoats as they are known) can attest to, this sci-fi/western TV show was completely mismanaged by the network until it was canceled halfway through its first season. To say the show has gone on to become a cult hit would be a gross understatement. Firefly has spawned a loyal following of Browncoats that any TV show on the air now would be drooling to have. This beautiful 6’ x 4’ play surface is inspired by the spectacular game tables that GF9 commissions for our events. This game mat is miles more worthy than any table you’d play your games of Firefly on and is sure to become an object of extreme sentimental value. “Vera” is the ultimate Firefly: The Game playing surface.

Rarity

GF9’s “Vera” Edition Game Mat debuted as a show-exclusive special this year at Gen Con and was an overwhelming success! Since the reveal of this premium game accessory we’ve been awash in cortex waves from across the ‘verse from eager Browncoats who want to add “Vera” to their game. Your employer had some sensitive data he sent around the normal Alliance routes—that meant traveling through Reaver space. The transport had a full complement of passengers hopeful for a new life on the rim worlds at the fringes of Alliance control. They didn’t get what was expected. The craft is a total loss. It remains structurally intact, but has been dead in the water for weeks until its discovery and it bears the distinct marks of Reaver boarding. The find came across the Cortex and your employer needs you to collect his data before the Alliance arrives to claim it—and he’s willing to pay you well for your efforts" New Table / Play Surface: I started with the Kraken Table but had the suggestion that the table is limiting and a distraction. So, I used the Mod Immersive Table and the code from Gloomhaven Fantasy Setup, to make a play surface with 9 color options. Big Damn Rule Book: All rules are in one big PDF and the rule book can "pop-out" so no more holding ALT to view it.

Oh, and every single time you move to reach these planets you have to draw a card to see if some event happens. This can be avoided by “moseying” only one space on your turn, but if you did that all the time someone else would win the game before you completed your first job. Over half of these event cards say that nothing happens. So much time in this game is spent moving a space, pulling a card that says “continue”, moving another space, another uneventful card, another space, another card, etc etc etc. Riveting. The cards that do have events on them are only slightly less variable than the misbehavin’ cards. Failed Concept With its faster drive core and higher crew capacity, captaining the Artful Dodger means working less delivery jobs and focusing on riskier, more profitable crime jobs! The first thing I modified was the movement of the Alliance Cruiser and the Reaver Cutter. I decided that a random movement was appropriate. I numbered the spaces they could go and randomly rolled (if this was more than 6 then I used two dice with the first space being a two on the dice). This seemed to work, but in my next game I will change this to move towards my ship where possible to make it a bit more cutthroat. The next idea I had was when I choose to ‘Mosey Along’ (you can move one space to conserve fuel and there is no Nav Card drawn), so any time I Mosey Along I roll a 1D6. If I score a six then I have to flip over a Nav Card just like during other movement. This added a small element of risk and discouraged taking the easy route. Derelict is the second of the community created jobs that won our creation contest! This mission was created by Christopher Schmitzand is a unique mission that sees you boarding a derelict ship that was passing through Reaver territory to collect intel for your employer. Get creative and think of the dream jobs you have always wanted to play with the crew of the Serenity. You can use content from the two expansions Respectable Folk and Wanted Fugitives, as well as everything from the base game of course, to create your ideal job.

Firefly: Adventures is a cooperative, mission based, skirmish-level game where the players use the different skills and abilities of Malcolm, Zoë, Jayne, Kaylee and Wash to succeed. The game contains two distinct miniature game pieces for each crew member, one in Casual relaxed pose, the other in a Heroic action pose. Crew may choose to Act Casual or Act Heroic and each pose has a unique set of actions that the Crew can perform on their turn, but be warned – while no one’s gonna pay much mind to someone with a casual demeanor, acting all heroic is sure to attract unwanted attention. Joyride is the second of the community created jobs that won our creation contest! This mission was created by Ben Dussault and is a unique mission that sees you chasing down the M.U.L.E. which has been taken for a joyride by some enterprising thugs. Want everything together, but not have to keep 3 different boards in place beside one another, as well as making the change to the original board at Harvest? This mat is for you! Lovely quality, pleasure to play on. Take a look at GF9's Firefly The Game, in its entirety. It's the Whole Gorram Collection! In this video you can see the base game along with all the expansions and extras which are all available now. The 'verse is a big place and there is always another job! Over the next few months we are going to start working alongside the community to create more missions for Firefly Adventures Brigands and Browncoats.Fluxx is a simple game at heart; you have a hand of cards, on your turn you draw a new card and play a new card until someone achieves the goal. But, the rules change throughout the game with cards changing the number of cards drawn, played and even held in hand. But the rule changes don’t end there, other rules can be played the turn the game around, upside down and on its head. The action cards are another mix of generic Fluxx familiar things with a few Firefly twists, if only in name for a few of them. Where rule cards change the core nature of the game action cards change it only for a moment. Lastly, the surprise cards give Fluxx a ‘take that’ aspect that increases the player interaction by interrupting other’s actions, perhaps even stealing victory out from under you! Part Problem Part Success is the third of the community created jobs that won our creation contest! Mathew Reid brings a unique mission where you are attempting a repair job on the M.U.L.E. and need to find a missing part, unfortunately time is not on your side as a gang of cowboys heads in to snatch the precious delivery you were in the process of making.

We hesitated to make, yet another version of Firefly. After making a ton of mods for our own use, we decided to make a public version. While sprucing it up for prime time... we realized there were too many things that we wanted to change, so we started over from scratch. We did grab a very few assets from previous mods like the ship models. If anyone ever wants to make better ships, please let us know! Here are some In 2002, director Joss Whedon, introduced sci fi fans to Firefly. Named after an in-show class of spaceship, this excellent series lasted only 14 episodes before it was cancelled by Fox. Firefly the Game drags tabletop gaming firmly into the Firefly universe. Well-themed, and cleverly implemented, it places you in the Captain’s seat of your very own Firefly and sends you out into the ‘verse. To enter you need to fill out the contest entry form found here: Gale Force 9 Firefly Contest Entry! Firefly: The Game isn’t the first board game based on a TV show we’ve reviewed here on Board Game Quest. A while ago we took a look at the Battlestar Galactica board game (spoiler alert: it’s phenomenal) and were able to state that you don’t have to be a fan of the show to love the board game. Does Firefly fall into the same mold? I’d say yes, but not as strongly. Goals are also taken from the show, either in a general theme or a specific aspect of Firefly, such as; “No power in the ‘verse can stop me,” or the Washburns or Browncoats all very familiar to those who watch the show. There is a small secret joy to completing a goal linked to your favourite episode or scene.

As I’ve already said, the rules vary depending on what cards are played, indeed this means that it is possible, in theory, to play an entire game of Fluxx without changing the draw one play one rule – but that would make a very dull game. Firefly Fluxx comes with the same rule variations as the other versions of Fluxx, including drawing more than one card and playing more than one card. Firefly boasts a range of expansions to add even more to your game. The great thing about this game is that the expansions can be added depending on what you want to add to your game. ‘Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!’– Hoban ‘Wash’ Washbourne The anniversary release also swaps out the original board game’s standard pieces for some deluxe components, most notably 15 hand-painted resin ship miniatures to represent the vessels flying around the system. That whole damn ‘verse is depicted on a new neoprene mat, with custom ship dice also among the upgrades.
