I was first drawn to this book by its evocative title. As the introduction states, when dusk falls upon a person’s life, the words they speak gain an added significance. The book’s main chapters look at the seven phrases spoken by Jesus from the cross. However the author does so in an engaging and different way from many such reflections. He looks instead at these words through the lens of doubt – doubt which the author claims resides in these words of Jesus, and doubt to which, I think, all honest Christians will admit, especially in times of profound suffering.The title of the book riffs off two things. The first is the darkness that descends as Jesus dies. The second is a line from the German philosopher Hegel that ‘the owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of dusk.’ Hegel means something like history only comes to understand itself at the end – much like we perhaps only understand the significance of our individual lives as we approach death. In The Falling of Dusk, I want to explore how we might come to understand the meaning of faith, doubt, and the human condition in the preternatural dusk that falls on the cross. What made you decide to write this book? Why now? We spoke to Paul to find out more about it. If you had to summarise your book’s argument in three sentences, what would they be? In everyday language, the term dusk is commonly used as another word for evening twilight—the period from sunset until nighttime. Other colloquial synonyms include nightfall, sundown, and eventide. In some contexts, dusk is also used to denote the setting of the Sun. Religious Significance Now that you have successfully infiltrated Garlemald, Lucia outlines the contingent's plans for scouting the vicinity. She assigns you, Alisaie, and Alphinaud the task of searching for survivors in the outskirts of the capital, which despite being within the city walls, are largely covered in vast swathes of ice and snow. I think it’s just that I as a game designer and a creative have matured. As Dusk Falls is my first game as a creative director, so I make all the shots. I really did the story I love with characters that are flawed and human and interesting to me, but I think when you see people play they are relatable real life people you could have met in your own life. The thing that was really important in terms of setting and story is that it’s really grounded. There’s no zombies or fantastic element, it’s all about real life. I think people have always been ready for it, we just didn’t let them do it. Either the controls are in the way or the games are only single-player. But watching and playing are two very different things. Discussing with someone who has the controller in hand, you have no power… it’s not just about power, it’s about balance. When we’re playing and contributing to the decisions all the time it levels the playing field. It’s like being on the bench during a football match or actually playing on the field. I think the barrier that needed to go was approachability. Using the phone as a controller is a massive step towards your loved ones who might not be gamers – for once you can share your passion with them.As with dawn, scientists define dusk as specific moments in time based on the solar elevation angle, which is the position of the Sun in relation to the horizon. There are 3 stages of dusk, each marking the end of 1 of the 3 phases of evening twilight: It’s all deeply engrossing. And certainly, there are few better ways to get to know someone. Do they take the bait that your cantankerous dad keeps dangling, or quietly seethe through your road trip? Do they distract a guard dog at the house you’ve just broken into? Do they piss in a bottle of lemonade in the fridge for good measure? Dusk, much like Dawn, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance across various societies. It symbolizes the conclusion of the day, a time for winding down, and introspection. In many cultures, dusk is associated with tranquility and the preparation for the restorative period of night. It is a time often used for evening prayers and meditation, reflecting a transition from the hustle of the day to the calm of the night. Dusk occurs as the sun makes its descent below the horizon, marking the end of the day. It's a time when the brightness of the day gradually fades, ushering in the first signs of evening. This phase, known as twilight, can be divided into three segments: civil, nautical, and astronomical dusk, each representing a different degree of light and occurring at distinct times after sunset. With the airships safely moored and the tempered imperials receiving treatment, Alphinaud informs you that Lucia wishes to decide on a course of action with the Scions. What is the significance of the title “The Falling of Dusk”? Nautical dusk follows, with the sun between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. The ocean horizon becomes indistinct during this phase, which is crucial for sailors as it marks the point where navigation via the horizon at sea becomes more challenging. Chopped into hour-long chapters rather than levels, the idea is to settle in for an episode on your own, with your partner, or rounding up seven other mates. Using your controller or a phone, you watch the action unfold and vote on each decision a character has to make. Civil dusk is when the geometric center of the Sun's disk goes 6 degrees below the horizon. It marks the end of civil twilight, which begins at sunset. At this moment, the Earth's atmosphere still reflects a large portion of sunlight, coloring a clear sky in different shades of orange and red. This is not an easy read, but it is a rewarding one, and although it is a Lent book, I think it can be read at any time of year. In the end, if we are unafraid to face our doubts they can, he argues, serve our faith rather than diminish it. These words of Jesus, spoken in extremis, are to call from us a response, which ultimately will take us on a journey not of despair, but of hope. Yeah! Here it’s safe. Of course you care about the characters hopefully, and you want to know what happens next, but you can discuss and experiment and try and navigate the best way for the characters.Y'shtola is particularly sensitive to disturbances in ambient aether, and since drawing close to the imperial capital, she has been beset by a strange malaise. She posits that it is likely caused by the monstrous tower looming on the horizon, where she senses vast amounts of aether gathering. Fortunately, she should still be well enough to participate in the meeting, and she agrees to join you soon. Astronomical dusk is the final phase of twilight, occurring when the sun sinks between 12 and 18 degrees below the horizon. This is the moment when the sky darkens significantly, transitioning into night. Astronomers favor this phase as the absence of sunlight allows for optimal observation of stars and other celestial bodies.
