About this deal

EVERY protein bar line has to have some variation on the classic fudge brownie flavour – it’s basically a right of passage at this point. Grenade have followed suit with the third of their Carb Killa flavours, so how does their offering work out? Yet I think this bar could have been majorly improved if the chocolate flavour was more intense – maybe with a chocolate creme instead of the caramel layer – and the crunch was more pronounced. In other words, it would have been improved if it had actually lived up to its name… Although it is generally better to avoid unnecessarily processed ingredients, it’s likely that your protein bar will contain a processed form of protein – but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. “Bars with protein as the dominant macronutrient will always contain some kind of powder or processed protein source,” says functional medicine nutritionist Steve Grant. This is because whole food proteins contain more naturally occurring sugars. “Whole food sources of protein, such as nuts and dates, might provide 10g of protein, but then your bar would also contain 15g of sugar and 25g of carbs.”

Basically, the banana flavour is the artificial flavour that’s a just that little bit too strong to be real banana.

Whichever flavours float your boat you’ll always get an awesome hit of protein to keep you fuller for longer and help you get those gains you work so hard for in the gym. In many ways this bar is similar to the Caramel Chaos – Obviously, the chocolate coating and the texture are exactly alike, but the flavour is overall pretty similar too if I’m honest. I think I’d have to eat them one after the other to really distinguish between them. Clifford recommends 0.7g of protein per kg of body weight for the average adult, in line with guidance from the British Nutrition Foundation. While you should be aiming to get enough protein from whole food sources in your diet, protein supplements can help boost your intake if you’re working towards specific fitness goals. The crushed peanuts add an authentic peanut flavour and add a light crunch which does well not to disrupt the overall creaminess of the bar.

Created in partnership with Oreo, this bar combines real Oreo pieces with Grenade’s tried-and-tested protein bar base. We are going to give you our honest opinion on what we think of them! The review team included a 4-year-old who has discerning tastes and is not normally a fan of no sugar anything. Tough crowd. The Armoury - Grenade Bar Flavours

Each 60g bar has just 1g of sugar and comes in at 233 calories, but it is still absolutely full of that iconic Oreo flavour that makes it taste like a real treat. The centre is soft, fudgey and slightly chewy, just like the previous two bars but this time with a nice chocolate flavour. The caramel layer adds a richness and a hint of salt which mixes well with the chocolate coating to create an overall flavour that reminds of, well, a fudge brownie! Carb Killa protein bars are manufactured using polyols. Polyols are calorie-reduced carbs, which contain around half the calories of sugar. Excessive consumption of polyols might cause gas or laxative effects in some people. For this reason, it is advised not to eat more than two of these protein bars per day.

This bar features a peanut butter flavoured base topped with a gooey strawberry layer and spindled with peanut pieces, then coated in milk chocolate. I have to say, the overall flavour is similar to that of the OG bar– maybe a little too familiar for some – probably owing to the caramel layer. There is some peanut flavour, but it’s much gentler than I, and other peanut lovers like me, would perhaps have liked. But in case that’s not quite enough, the Oreo protein bar is also wrapped in Grenade’s special low-sugar chocolate with a sprinkling of real Oreo pieces mixed in. But these aren’t just any Oreo pieces, these have been created especially for this collaboration by the masterminds at Oreo so that they’re super low in sugar. There’s the same nougat-y texture to the base as in the other bars. It’s smooth and chewy, with the crispies adding a satisfying crunch when you take a bite. Grenade protein bars are the UK’s best selling bars and with the huge range of flavours available it’s easy to see why.

WHY CARB KILLA?

I’m SO glad Grenade has done another sweet/salty flavour. They nailed the White Chocolate Salted Peanut flavour, and I had all faith they’d nail this one too. The best protein bars offer a convenient way to top up essential nutrients when on the move – but from the multitude of brands and flavours out there, how can you tell which taste great, are healthy enough to eat regularly and deliver the protein punch you need? Whereas the ‘older’ bars all seem to hover around 15-16g, the newer flavours have been consistently up at 18-20g, almost matching the 20-22g protein in each bar.
