About this deal

The mantles are produced by dipping a meshed fabric (e.g., nylon web) into a solution of thorium nitrate. Other metals are added to the solution for a variety of reasons. For example, cerium is added to increase the light output, while beryllium increases the mantle’s strength. The fabric is then removed from the solution and dried. Lastly, it is coated with lacquer and fashioned into one of two types of mantles: a soft mantle or a hard mantle. The soft mantle is essentially a bag with either a drawstring or some type of fitting that attaches the mantle to the burner. The fabric of a hard mantle is supported by a metal frame that gives it a dome-like shape. For solo campers, a lantern mantle may prove to be overkill unless you really aren’t a fan of the dark or are especially keen on the idea of being spotted by passing satellites(!). While lantern mantles might not prove to be the best choice for the ultralight, gram-counting thru-trekker, for those pitching up near where they’re parking, or who require more light than offered by a standard headlamp or flashlight, they are an option well worth considering, and not purely for aesthetic or stylistic reasons, either… Reason #1: There’s an open flame (well, nearly open — the presence of the glass casing on most lanterns conceals the flame to a certain extent). Tie mantle around groove in burner cap (see drawing). Flat side of mantle should face generator. Distibute folds of mantle evenly at top and cut off suplus string. Burn mantle according to instructions on mantle envelope. ALWAYS USE GENUINE COLEMAN MANTLES

Mantles have a binding thread to tie them to the lamp fitting. Until asbestos was banned due to its carcinogenicity, an asbestos thread was used. Modern mantles use a wire or a ceramic fiber thread. div class="bvseo-author">Answered by: Krystal, at Coleman®

The flitting beams of multiple headlamps can create a curiously strobe-like effect and often result in disgruntled companions when blinded by their harsh glare. Power-wise, headlamps also rarely offer enough “oomph” to illuminate large spaces when on flood or wide setting.

Important Info

Avid campers were estimated to receive 0.05 to 6 mrem per year, while the estimate for one-time campers was 0.002 to 0.06 mrem. Pertinent Regulations I have not seen much quantitative information about the thorium content of the mantles. Nevertheless, NUREG-1717 assumed that a typical mantle contained 250 mg (0.027 uCi) for the purpose of its dose calculations. They noted that some mantles contained up to 400 mg. Luetzelschwab and Googins measured a total of 0.065 uCi in two mantles.

An incandescent gas mantle, gas mantle or Welsbach mantle is a device for generating incandescent bright white light when heated by a flame. The name refers to its original heat source in gas lights which illuminated the streets of Europe and North America in the late 19th century. Mantle refers to the way it hangs like a cloak above the flame. Gas mantles were also used in portable camping lanterns, pressure lanterns and some oil lamps. [1] As the name suggests, the Campingaz 206L Lantern offers a very respectable output of 206 lumens, which should just about be enough to light a communal area of 25 or so square feet between tents. It also weighs in at a reasonable 16 oz and features a broad attachable base for extra stability, a steel surround on the glass casing to avoid breakage, a power regulator switch, and all-in-all offers great value for money. If lantern is on emergency standby in case of storm or power failure, empty all gasoline from Fount occasionally, refill with clean, fresh fuel. Store in a cool a place as possible.

Smaller lanterns will offer fewer lumens but also consume less fuel (and thus prove lighter and cheaper over the long run).

Let cool after burning it off before lighting lantern. Good air pressure in the lantern will help to shape it and 30 minutes burning on first lighting will help its strength. If lantern blazes and smokes more than a few seconds when first lit, then close valve and repopen one fourth turn as soon as light dims. If camping alone or in a group of adults, then the risks posed by using either a fuel-fed lantern mantle or a candle lantern become minimal. Making your group aware of the lantern’s fuel source should be enough to have them tread carefully and avoid any inadvertent mishaps. Use only Coleman Stove and Lantern Fuel, or clean white white gasoline. Never use fuel containing lead compounds or lubricating oils. Store your fuel in a clean, closed metal container. (Glass containers are dangerous - may break.) h2>

A dose of 2 mrem was calculated for a small child who played with a used mantle and ingested part of the ash. Your fuel source (usually gas canisters) may add another four or five pounds on top of that… yikes! As mentioned above, the ideal lantern for your outdoor adventures will depend largely on your own preferences and needs. Are you a solo camper or group camper? Will you be using it on multi-day treks or only single overnighters where weight is not an issue? Do you balk at the idea of having a naked flame in your living and sleeping area? Anyone who spends a lot of nights out in the wild or car camping could benefit from adding a lantern mantle to their kit. While more modern equivalents such as headlamps or battery-powered flashlights do essentially the same job, those plumping for lantern mantles do so on account of a number of highly desirable benefits, which you’ll find in the review below. c) Any person is exempt from the regulation in this part and from the requirements for a license set forth in section 62 of the Act to the extent that such person receives, possesses, uses, or transfers: At present, camping brands Coleman and Campingaz have something of a monopoly over the fuel-burning lantern market, although Swedish brand Primus also produce a range of very popular, reliable, and well-made products. h2>
