About this deal

We are following the second case of Adam Fawley and his team. A young lady is found in a basement of an elderly man, with a three year old boy. Instantly, everyone assumes it’s a very similar case to the one that took place a few years ago in Austria 🇦🇹. Josef Fritzl kept his daughter in the basements of his home for 24 years, having 7 children from her (true story 😱). I like the inclusion of Fawley’s personal life. It’s not overshadowing of the plot and helps us to understand his character a lot more. If it was expanded on any more, it might be bothersome. It’s just enough to add to his character and not get in the way of the plot. The characters feel realistic, while not being perfect. They each have their own set of flaws. I especially enjoy Fawley, Quinn, and Somer. Thank you to the team at Penguin Random House, for proving an audiobook for me listen to, in exchange for an honest review. The first book in the DI Adam Fawley series, Close to Home by Cara Hunter, is one dandy of a debut novel and had my nerves fizzing from the start! Promising new police procedural series about the disappearance of an eight-year-old girl. Close to Home offers compelling characters, an unpredictable mystery, and some surprising twists and turns. I'm not usually one for reading crime/police drama; watching it on the old screen Yes (I love Vera, Inspector Frost and the like) reading it; not so much, but made an exception for this as it had such an intriguing premise behind it that really captured my attention. The elderly resident of the home had no idea who they were, or how they got there. He had never seen them before, he declared. But he had recently been diagnosed with dementia…Would recommend to all those who love police procedurals and especially if you love use of mixed media. I would understand if this happened once or twice, but they have solved the whole mystery with coincidences happening one after another as well as random plot lines being added in the middle of nowhere, just to keep the story going. Who is the fairest of them all?’ demands the princess of her reflection, as her gold cardboard crown slips over one eye. ‘Don’t you think I look absolutely beautiful ?’

Barry’s grown-up son from a previous marriage dupes him cruelly and leaves his dad in a right mess by the end – though you can’t help feeling the buffoon deserves it.

There is a compelling blend of police procedural, mystery, crime and psychological thriller. The characterization is superb. Fawley is very perceptive and knows his team very well. He may not know quite what they're up to, but he knows that something's up. He has enough trust in them to let them run with their theories, but savvy enough to keep an eye on them. Quinn and Gislingham (Gis) feature prominently. We get enough of the private lives of the team to satisfy my curiosity, but not enough to overpower the main storyline although, interestingly, they are linked. I always love a well-written police procedural that goes deeper than the case and gives the MC dimension, in this case we have Alex who says WE'RE GONNA HAVE ANOTHER CHILD IN THIS HOUSE WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. I was team Adam on this one. What Alex did was the equivalent of holding a man to gunpoint and asking him to twerk... what choice do you have? Either twerk or die. DISCLOSURE: I listened to the audiobook of In The Dark (DI Adam Fawley #2) written by Cara Hunter, narrated by Lee Ingleby and Emma Cunliffe, published by Penguin. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. Daisy?’ says a voice. ‘Where are you?’ More steps, closer now, and the voice is angry. ‘You can’t hide from me. I’m going to find you. You know that, don’t you, Daisy. I’m going to find you.’ There were so many twists and unexpected curveballs thrown here that I was in danger of getting whiplash.

year-old Daisy is reported missing after her family's BBQ. Who's at fault? Her image-obsessed mother? Her shifty-eyed father? Or her sullen brother?

In December 2003, Luke Ryder was found dead in the garden of the family home in London, leaving behind a wealthy older widow and three stepchildren. Nobody saw anything. A few years earlier, a young woman, a BBC reporter, who lived nearby, mysteriously went missing. Are the two cases connected? The attention to detail is incredible, and following along is so. Much. FUN.' Catherine Ryan Howard

I’m going to say this now, before we get started. You won’t like it, but trust me, I’ve done this more times than I care to punish myself remembering. In a case like this – a kid – nine times out of ten it’s someone close to home. Family, friend, neighbour, someone in the community. Don’t forget that. However distraught they look, however unlikely it seems, they know who did it. Perhaps not consciously, and perhaps not yet. But they know.

I really enjoyed this one! The mixed media in this is nothing like I've read before and it really made it a stand out for me - there are interview transcripts, tweets, media articles, letters and all in differing texts and styles and that is a win! Pros: well-written (huge improvement from book #1 – well done!), fast-paced, juicy j case, solid twisty twist, multidimensional MC A girl and her child imprisoned in a basement, the disappearance of a young mother that has confounded the local authorities for the last few years, having all the hallmarks of a cold case. With DI Fawley and he’s team starting to investigate its instantly apparent that doubt surrounds both parents Sharon and Barry’s accountability, they soon appear to be the prime suspects.
