About this deal

I have found that the Ninja V has revolutionised the way I shoot, and despite the limitations of the Sony A7 III and it’s 8-bit video, the Ninja V helps act as a guide to ensure that I pushed the camera to its limits. The ProRes RAW format is a perfect vehicle for an 8K workflow, from ease of use natively on the timeline within Final Cut Pro, to the flexibility of the image processing with full adjustment of WB and ISO control. The Ninja V has a number of matching profiles for different cameras, Atomos are constantly updating their list of available camera profiles. Perfect for matching with your camera profile. You can take this a step further and load custom LUTs allowing you to match your workflow. And now many of the latest mirrorless cameras can output a Raw video signal which the Atomos can save as ProRes Raw direct from the camera, the difference is stunning. If you have been brought up shooting Raw on stills camera and are used to the quality and control they give you, then prepare to be amazed as the video version offers exactly the same benefits. Ultimately the Atomos Ninja V enables you to shoot great video more easily and take some of the processing strain away from your computer.

The Ninja V also works as an ideal HDR monitor, allowing a large dynamic range to be viewed on the monitor itself. And the LUT support means you can apply a look to the footage and either bake it in, or just use it for viewing to see what the finished footage will look like.

8K Resolution

The Atomos Ninja V is an essential add-on for owners of the latest generation of mirrorless cameras who want to get the best video their camera can manage. It opens up higher-quality formats, with more color data, and offers tools like waveforms that many stills-first cameras omit. Included in the codec arsenal is the ability to record video inputs using the10-bit H.265 (HEVC) codec for high quality compressed recordings with small file sizes, which is perfect for the world we now live in, where streaming and sharing online has dramatically increased. The ability to record up to 6K using advanced edit-ready formats including ProRes RAW, ProRes, and DNxHD/HR requires fast, robust, and expansive storage. Ninja V supports removable SSD drives which provide the space and sustained performance to meet these needs. AtomX SSDmini drives are more compact than standard SATA SSDs and offer an affordable alternative to an SD card of similar capacity or performance. They support up to 4TB storage, sequential read speeds of up to 550MB/s and write speeds up to 500MB/s. The AtomX SSDmini drives are able to record up to 150 minutes of 4K ProRes. Measuring 8cm long, 7.5cm wide and weighing as little as 88g, the custom-built drive neatly fits into the Ninja V without impacting the overall footprint of the device. Three years after launching the original Ninja V, Atomos has announced its successor is on the way in the form of the Ninja V+. The new device features roughly the same form factor as the original Ninja V, but uses a new ’stealth grey bezel’ and an updated chipset to record the highest quality video possible. Before we go into those, it’s worth noting that internally the A7 III stores video footage with XAVC-S compression, using H.264 in a common .mp4 container.

Disclaimer: All product features and technical specifications stated are subjected to Atomos’ sole interpretation and explanation. On the surface, you would think that there is little difference, and when it comes to core quality, there is very little difference. However, with the Atomos Ninja V, you have a few more file options. Does NOT come with a battery! Not even a baby one! Come on, guys... this is not a cheap product, surely you can throw in a small NP-F battery. There is not a feature a CO or CA would want that this monitor doesn't provide right out of the box! False colour exposure representation, yep! Every kind of scope and graph, yep! Zebras, yep (albeit with some limitations on configuration of the zebra range, but that's not such an issue if you use false colour as well). If you would want it on a monitor, the Ninja V has it!

To save space and support longer recordings, many cameras record compressed 4:2:0 8-bit video internally. If the camera is able to output video via HDMI, the quality can often be preserved in a 4:2:2 8-bit or 10-bit format. Ninja V+ can record more color information and immediately add value to your production with your existing camera rig. Additionally, if you’re shooting Log footage, the ability to bypass internal compression will offer the best possible dynamic range. Ninja V+ is designed to maximize the quality of your videos and allow you to extend every aspect of your creative vision. Whatever the case, it still enables me to get better footage (greater color depth) than I otherwise could out of the DVX200. And the screen is easy on the eyes with plenty of assistive features like false colors, focus peaking, and the like. The DVX200's screen isn't very large or bright, so this is a nice step up in that regard. Pass-through via HDMI to an even larger screen also worked just fine. I used the larger screen to see what my fottage would look like without any enhancements and the Atamos screen to gauge focus and exposure with the built-in assistive tools.Built with a sleek aluminium body the Ninja V has been designed for maximum durability, allowing you to put this compact, 360g monitor, into your camera bag or mount it on your camera without becoming over-encumbered. If you try to grade 4:2:0 8-bit shot in Log on a mirrorless camera then it can be tough as the color information just isn’t there. The extra data recorded by the Atomos Ninja V make a big difference, and make shooting Log on mirrorless cameras a sensible option. You can also do some other cool things. I use the Ninja V as a tool for reviewing cameras. It's able to record the overlay information on the camera's screen, which lets you really review how an autofocus system works in the field, or take screenshots of menus. If you're an aspiring tech vlogger, you may find these features handy. The clip embedded above, which shows off the animal eye detection feature found in recent Sony cameras, was recorded using the Ninja V. Think About Some Accessories
