At a certain point, quite early, I realized that Priestley didn't like a single one of his characters and I needed to stop. OK, just possibly the cold brusque northerner who cons everyone may have escaped with the fewest literary criticisms, but I was reminded of the last Graham Greene book I'll ever read. This book appears to Priestley's first attempt at humour, not comedy, and he has a talent for psychological insight, probably from spending his life among actresses. I may still read his first and most famous picaresque comedy, where stereotypes will be thinner and funnier. Plots and storylines are not his strong point. In a way this is a novel that hangs on a very flimsy plot. But character studies and reflections on human nature are his forte. I have rarely become more involved with or cared more about a group of folk who seemingly have very little to care about than in Angel Pavement. I even care about what happened to them after the book closes. His prolific output continued right up to his final years, and to the end he remained the great literary all-rounder.
