About this deal

As a dedicated baby sleep consultant, I’m passionate about routine being the cornerstone for developing long lasting sleep habits and associations. With over two decades of experience, I’ve assisted thousands of newborns, babies, toddlers, and their parents in achieving a full night sleep. In that case, I’d recommend phasing out the night feed by reducing the length and quantity of the feed. Babies naturally fall asleep during feeding. Do not stress out about a baby who falls asleep on the breast or bottle. It’s normal! A full tummy and the warmth of being held as they feed makes them sleepy.

However there are also some downsides to eat play sleep that may mean it won’t suit you and your family: Living on a liquid diet can be complicated for some newborns. Complications can range from simply being hard to burp and gassy, to immaturity issues such as dairy sensitivity or intolerance and reflux. The 7pm to 7am Sleeping Baby Routine supports a baby’s digestive comfort which promotes sleep and one of those support tactics is to boost gut bacteria for newborns with a sensitive gut, born by Caesarean section or formula fed. If the naps fall into place, then you should find night time sleep is better too. This is because an overtired baby is often harder to settle at night and tends to sleep much lighter too. However most babies do thrive on some kind of routine, even if it is a little loose and can change if they are going through a growth spurt or developmental leap.

What are the signs my baby is ready to night wean?

Introducing solid foods – this may change up your routine a little, especially as you’re getting started with weaning.

In my experience, when my efforts at a schedule did not work, I let it slide for a few days but kept trying to encourage the loose routine. Starting first thing with a proper milk feed, and going from there. Don’t worry though, if you want your milk supply to stay the same, Charmian recommends expressing after the first morning feed to drain your breasts. Structure your baby’s routine to encourage active time awake/ playtime after day feeds to allow for digestion and at their most content time of day. Eat, play, sleep, repeat!

Select a format:

You could also introduce a split feed as part of the bedtime routine, leaving no need for a dream feed. To help phase out a night feed, Charmian also suggests: You can do that starting with when your baby typically wakes up. Say it is at 7.30am, you then add 1.5 hours and that’s their first nap. They’ll wake around an hour after that, and then the rhythm repeats itself. Naps Once you are at a 10-minute breastfeed or 90ml bottle feed, stop waking your baby for a dream feed. Supplement milk with a course of high quality probiotics and vitamin D to help strengthen gut, immunity and help reduce gas. Creating a consistent sleep schedule is crucial for your baby's development and overall well-being, especially for babies between the ages of 4 to 12 months. By establishing a 7pm to 7am sleep routine, you can ensure that your baby gets enough rest while also allowing yourself some much-needed sleep. To help your baby sleep until 7am, it's essential to develop a calming and predictable bedtime routine, such as bathing, reading a story, or singing a lullaby. This routine will signal to your baby that it's time to sleep and make the transition to bedtime more comfortable.
