Tom D refuse is a high-ranking prefect, a sort of policeman whose job it is to enforce the accords between the inhabitants of the glitter. These characters seem real and lived in, with lives outside their jobs, different ways of approaching problems, and each other.

Indeed, it may be that the Tench incident is an act by those determined to destroy the democratic condition of the Glitter Band. Alastair Reynolds is one of my very favourite authors, every book is a much-anticipated event, and with Poseidon's Wake he shows yet again why that is. Although this is the third book in the Prefect Dreyfus series, and I had not read the previous books, I found "Machine Vendetta" to be perfectly readable, understandable, and highly enjoyable.A mix of hard science with space opera, big ideas, and again characters that readers want to know more about.

Reynolds combines depth in characterization and dazzling hard-science applications to keep the reader turning pages. I'm getting a little jaded on evil AI stories, but Reynolds has a different approach that is intriguing. I don't know if this is a counterpoint to some of the police abuse stories we've seen recently, but it's hard not to see it as such. The action, technology, character development, and scope of "Machine Vendetta" really worked for me.The action takes place in "the glitter," a band of about 10,000 space stain like habitats orbiting the planet Yellowstone.
