About this deal

Elizabeth Colt Jarvis (Beach) was the daughter of Elizabeth Jarvis Colt's brother, John Samuel Jarvis, and Elizabeth Hall Jarvis. Maybe Jo did mature early for her age and did have a lot of sense, especially with input from dear Marmee, but she was so young and had never been in love to be potentially jaded by it, how could she not have a drop of feeling for him, and instead, develop feeling for Professor Bhaer so quickly. In the course of the novel, beautiful, vain Meg marries Laurie’s tutor, John Brooke, and starts her own family; quiet, sickly Beth dies from scarlet fever; artistic Amy marries Laurie after he is turned down by Jo; and Jo marries Professor Bhaer, whom she meets while living in a boardinghouse, and together they set up a school for boys. Loring reissued Moods after 1870 with a double frontispiece and a title page stating “Author of ‘Little Women,’ ‘An Old-Fashioned Girl,’ ‘Hospital Sketches’” beneath Alcott’s name.

It is interesting to read the discussion about Laurie and Jo not getting married because of Alcott’s decision to go against the grain or to take back control of her characters. Before the proposal, Laurie is shown to be someone who is taking his education for granted, and only really digs in the final year just before his graduates and proposes; after the proposal, he’s shown to throw a bit of a tantrum, and fritters his talent and his grandfather’s money away sulking over the rejection. But seriously, rereading the book with the eyes of an adult, especially one familiar with nineteenth-century literature, isn’t it blatantly obvious Beth is marked to die from page one? Louisa May Alcott recreates her own family’s dramatic, comic, and sometimes tragic experiences in this heartfelt novel that has been celebrated and shared for generations—and this unabridged edition will continue to be shared for years to come. The text was also altered somewhat, apparently to tone down some of the undecorous or slangy language. Although the March family is on the poor end of the economic spectrum when compared with people they know and socialize with, they do have a maid named Hannah. I didn’t mind their preachiness – some of Marmee’s wise words helped me from time to time, and they were written in a time when there was greater emphasis placed on the formation of one’s character, right? But as such topics were considered requisite for novels marketed at young women of the time, Alcott faced a dilemma. He did some philosophical speech which seemed to answer the supposed concerns would have been raised by readers over the Jo- Laurie- love – amy- marriage ! This copy is dated 1870 on the title page, in the publisher's maroon cloth binding with gilt titling on the front cover and spine. The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica This article was most recently revised and updated by Amy Tikkanen.

But I might have my own bias going too, as I married my best friend, and I’m absolutely loving marriage to him ;)) – perhaps in response from the clamor readers regarding Part 1 that Jo and Laurie marry, her own desire for an unconventional or realistic ending, or for the sake of her father’s educational and career agenda (to marry her heroine off to an older professor, with whom she then founds a school – I feel there’s a bit of paternal influence there from Bronson Alcott). HALF TITLE PG HAS CHIPS WEAR ON RITE EDGE, INNER HINGES STARTING SLIGHTLY , Unique pictures of actors in stage play throughout on glossy paper. First blank page has original owners name signed twice, once in pen and once in pencil (Mary M Dillon) both dated July 1869. I suppose I’ve been willing to believe that the unsatisfactory feeling is part of the point (perhaps giving Alcott too much credit? My main reaction to Marmee reading it this time was, “Wow, I wish my kids would sit still long enough for me to deliver those kind of long, improving lectures full of good morals! Out of economic necessity, the two oldest Alcott daughters began working early to help support the family. This has given rise to a persistent myth that the book was issued in a regular binding and a gift binding.

Andrew Smith, senior v-p and publisher of Abrams Children’s Books, said in a statement, “ Little Women promises to be the event movie of the holiday season and we’re thrilled to be working with the filmmakers and the team at Sony Pictures on a creative publishing program that extends and enhances the experience of the film.
