It is interesting to read the discussion about Laurie and Jo not getting married because of Alcott’s decision to go against the grain or to take back control of her characters.Before the proposal, Laurie is shown to be someone who is taking his education for granted, and only really digs in the final year just before his graduates and proposes; after the proposal, he’s shown to throw a bit of a tantrum, and fritters his talent and his grandfather’s money away sulking over the rejection. But seriously, rereading the book with the eyes of an adult, especially one familiar with nineteenth-century literature, isn’t it blatantly obvious Beth is marked to die from page one?
