Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. He monologues that he finally accepted that he can no longer be the family man he should have been, and that he should just cherish the life he has now. Fluke is the moving story of a dog with the memories of a human, with the signature twisting plot James Herbert is famed for. As he grow some of these recollections become more vivid and he goes looking for the life he left behind that he cannot quite remember.

Somewhere deep in his subconscious, Fluke knows that there’s something different about him, something that separates him from all of the other dogs. A paperback edition of a horror novel published simultaneously in hardback, which follows a mongrel as he wanders the streets of the city, tormented by a memory deep in his consciousness that he had once been a man. No particular emotional reaction to this book, however, I was somewhat pleased that the book managed to translate well from the 1995 film. The descriptions of the diminutive world as seen through the eyes of a mongrel and his tormenting memories rising from the depths of his consciousness are a delight to read.
