About this deal

One of the actors in the second story/case I recognised from Midsomer Murders (an episode about a travelling fair) and The Bill, but they may have also guest-starred in Heartbeat. But by the time I was halfway across the Atlantic, she began to seem rather far away and Mother began to seem terribly near. Watched last night or the night before, TPTV's recent screening of film Live Now Pay Later (the cast including Ian Hendry and Geoffrey Keen, with an early career appearance by Peter Bowles).

It did say in the listings that Jackpot was a 'lost' film, so I should have expected the transfer not to be great (it was rough in parts, with it looking like some footage was missing with the jump cuts and the abrupt ending). Have had another look at the episode guide on the IMDb, and I'm thinking the airdates don't seem right. In particular, Michael Winner’s True Crimes was at the centre of a debate about such shows’ ‘effects on fear, and their questionable taste’, leading to the programme’s cancellation in 1994 (ibid. Don't know if this is the start of a repeat run of the whole series, but airing on New Year's Eve (Saturday 31st December) at 8 pm - 10.Yes, they've done a good job on this, my favourite film, although there are still a few seconds here and there of thin vertical scratches that they have overlooked. It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow: The Story of the 1943 Bethnal Green Tube Disaster (drama documentary, premiering on Sunday 13th November at 12. The genre became popular in the 1980s; Deborah Jermyn notes that in the US, such shows were labelled ‘reality-based entertainment’ (2009: 240). His links in the previous three episodes had a serious tone, but there was a slight glint in his eye.

By then Monique of all people ought to have known that even if I did have a sort of mother complex it certainly wasn't the type that interferes with your love life. It did feel like his links in this episode were filmed at a much later date compared to those in the previous three episodes (and yet the copyright year at the end of the end credits was the same as the one for episode 3 (the year 1992). I would like to see again the surviving episodes of The Troubleshooters; Harry Worth (BBC series), Ryan International, Vendetta and W. Super production values, they used great sets and costumes, and really did focus on making this show look quite excellent. It was definitely a different episode from either of the previous two ISC episodes (tomorrow (Saturday) evening's edition is the fourth). When these turn out to be untrue later in the film, we see the boy questioning his whole view of Baines who he suspects may have murdered his wife – though we, the audience, know better having witnessed it ourselves. He is determined to play it cool and save Baines from being arrested, but his protestations have such a naivety about them that the police, who were initially satisfied with Baines’ account, begin to suspect him of murder. But it is an excellent film in its own right and one well-deserving of a wider re-assessment, not least as it took the incredibly risky approach of having a boy with no previous acting experience in the leading role.
