There are some absolutely adorable moments when they’re both trying to figure out how to be a good husband and wife, showing that they aren’t just together for the sake of dodging what others would say to them as an ace woman and gay man. It’s nice to see a piece of fiction address how people can feel that kind of connection with the work they partake in. One of my favorite shows of the fall 2023 season was the animated adaptation of INORI's light novel series, the latest in a string of isekai anime revolving around the concept of video game "villainess" characters redeeming themselves.

But because of her experiences as a woman who is constantly pushed toward her "need" to pursue romantic interests, it is extremely difficult for her to interact with romantic stories that include women despite liking the general content of romance stories. Such is the case for both Yuriko and Gakurouta, two individuals who are “unproductive” in a society where having children is expected, even if the marriage is one of practicality. Recently, she has brought such discussions to the public by organizing and moderating panels at comic cons centered on anthropology/culture related topics. The others were mutated after being exposed to the blood or other bodily fluids of the first type of Varuga…as was the case with Yotaka-kun. Despite the fact that they'll never fall in love, they still work to accommodate for their newlywed life along with Yuriko's love for Boys' Love and Gakurouta's hidden feelings for his childhood best friend. His stance with a clenched fist and the action lines, demonstrates his determination to be the best husband he can for Yuriko (his wife). However, in the back half of the manga, Yuriko understands the uncomfortableness that her fujoshi thoughts can put on Gakurouta, and she changes, focusing instead on how to give him what he needs from her instead of fulfilling a BL plotline. Romantic love for them exists between the pages of a manga or same-gender attraction to the gardener who happens to be your friend from way back when—not one another. What I love about this is that this scene appears in the first chapter and then again almost 100 pages later. Meanwhile, Gakurouta harbors unrequited feelings for his heterosexual childhood friend Sousuke Kusama, who also happens to be the gardener for their estate. But a chance second encounter on the street revealed that as an asexual woman and gay man, they might have much more in common than they initially assumed.

With his handy wife-guy book in hand, Gakurouta is trying his hardest to be the husband he thinks Yuriko deserves. In so many ways, I Want To Be a Wall relies on a shared cultural narrative of fitting in: it’s half of the appeal of the debut volume.
